City Mouse and Country Mouse--Past Passive

(TESOL Worksheets--Past Simple Passive)
Google: drive, docs, pub
[The pictures are from the Internet and are not mine.  I print out the pictures, and cut off the captions, and try and elicit from the students the names of the mice.  (If I give them the name of City Mouse, they can often guess the name Country Mouse.)  I tell them that Country Mouse is coming to visit City Mouse, and ask them to predict what will happen.
The students are put into small groups of 3 or 4 people, and given the story of Country Mouse and City Mouse.  The story is cut up and all out of order, and the groups have to assemble the story in the correct order.  Once they finish, they call me over and I tell them if they are correct or not.  If they are correct, I remove the story from their desk, and give them the version of the story with the passive verbs missing from the text.  They have to write in the missing verbs.  A copy of the answers is posted outside the room, and they can send one (and only one) member of the group outside to look at the answers if they need to.  Often I will do this game as a race between groups.]

This is the story of two mice: Country Mouse, and City Mouse.  Country Mouse lived in the countryside, but City Mouse lived in the big city.  One day, Country Mouse decided to take a trip into the city.  Country Mouse visited City Mouse.

When City Mouse was visited by Country Mouse, he was very excited.  “Oh, Country Mouse! Country Mouse!” he cried.  “I have so many exciting things to show you in the city.”  And City Mouse told Country Mouse all about the exciting things in the city.

After Country Mouse was told about all the exciting things in the city, he could hardly wait to try them out.  City Mouse told Country Mouse about all the delicious kinds of cheese in the city, and Country Mouse wanted very badly to try some of this cheese.  They went to the supermarket, where Country Mouse and City Mouse ate all of the cheese on the shelves.

After all the cheese was eaten, Country Mouse and City Mouse needed to decide what to do next.  City Mouse told Country Mouse about the all the wine in the city.  Country Mouse had never drunk wine before, and after he was told about the wine, he was very excited.  So they went to the corner store, and they drank all the wine there.

After all the wine was drunk, Country Mouse wanted to do something more exciting.  City Mouse told Country Mouse about music.  Country Mouse had never heard music before, but he wanted to listen to it.  So Country Mouse and City Mouse went to a record store, and they bought some records.

After the records were bought, they went home and listened to the music.  While Country Mouse was listening to the music, City Mouse said to him, “Listen, Country Mouse, there is something I need to tell you, and it’s very important.  In the city, there are many cats.  We mice always have to be careful so the cats don’t catch us.  My cousin was caught by a cat last year, and then he was eaten by the cat.”

But Country Mouse had never seen any cats before.  “I’m not scared of cats,” he said.  Soon, City Mouse got tired, and wanted to go to bed.  But Country Mouse still wanted to enjoy the city, so he wandered outside of City Mouse’s mouse home, and walked around the city.  But before he had gotten too far, a cat attacked Country Mouse, and chased him all around the city.

When Country Mouse was attacked and was chased by the cat, he ran and ran.  “Help me!  Help me!” he yelled.  His yells were heard by City Mouse, who threw a rope down to Country Mouse.

After the rope was thrown, Country Mouse climbed the rope and escaped from the cat.  “Oh, thank you! Thank you!  You have surely saved me.”  Country Mouse went back home to the countryside, and told everyone back in the countryside the story of how he was saved by City Mouse.
