[This was a worksheet I used with a young learners class. We used this sheet after completing the Graded Reader Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Retold By Margaret Tarner. The worksheet had the dual purpose of giving students more information on the story, and also reviewing the passive voice.]
Frankenstein
"Frankenstein"
is a famous novel. "Frankenstein" was written by Mary Shelley. It is
about a monster who was created by a strange scientific experiment. Shelley
started writing the story when she was nineteen. It was published when she was
twenty-one. The first edition was published in London in 1818, but without Mary
Shelley's name. Shelley's name was printed on the second edition. The second edition was published in France in
1823.
Mary
Shelley was from England, but the story takes place in the country of
Switzerland , mostly in the region of Geneva.
Shelley had travelled in the region of Geneva, Switzerland, so she knew
the area.
The
idea for the story came from a competition between Mary Shelley and her
friends, including her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and also Lord
Byron, and his doctor John Polidori. The
friends decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror
story. After thinking for weeks about what her possible storyline could be,
Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by the
result. She then wrote Frankenstein.
Since publication of the novel, the
name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the Monster itself.
This usage is technically wrong.
"Frankenstein" refers to the doctor Victor Frankenstein, and
not the Monster. However, it is still
very common for the Monster to be called "Frankenstein."
Along
with "Dracula," Frankenstein is one of the first horror stories in
English. It is also considered to be one
of the most famous horror stories ever.
The story has been made into
several movies. The most famous movie
was made in 1931 starring Boris Karloff as the Monster. Following this, a whole series of
"Frankenstein" movies were made, including: "Bride of Frankenstein," "Son
of Frankenstein," "Ghost of Frankenstein," "Frankenstein
Meets the Wolf Man," "House of Frankenstein," "House of Dracula"
and "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein."
In
many of these movies later movies, the Monster from the Frankenstein movie met
and fought other Monsters such as Dracula and the Wolfman.
