I remember an Incredible Hulk story penned by Todd McFarland. In it the Incredible Hulk turned gray and spoke. His encounter with Wolverine was worth one cover. (Ol' Wolvie never died -- Marvel needed him to sell comics). He also said, "My Rock! And my Redeemer!" Shortly after that I understood these would be never ending -- I stopped reading.

I think this is actually the first Incredible Hulk collection I've read. (Although, of course, I've long been interested in the character through TV and movies).
This one takes place in the mid-80s. The storyline is that Banner had previously established control over the Hulk, but then, he regressed again into the raging hulk. (According to Wikipedia, it looks like the Hulk has gone through several incarnations over the years.)

As for the "never ending" aspect of it: when I was younger, I always thought the idea of a never-ending story was what made comic books so fascinating. But now the older I get, the more tiresome I am finding it. Especially when it seems that the writers can only repeat the same basic story beats over and over again. (The idea of a never ending story actually may have been interesting, if the characters had been allowed to grow and evolve. Perhaps there's an alternate universe out there somewhere in which the comic book industry had allowed the heroes to age, and for a new generation of heroes to grow up. That might have been interesting.)
