Cause and Effect Model Essay

Worksheet: docspub
This is a model essay for cause and effect essays.
The activities it uses are Write in the Missing Verbs (check answers with a running dictation), and then subsequently Match the Sentences in the Paragraph to their Function.
In my class, I use this to supplement Unit 5 Writing Skill: Writing a Cause and Effect Essay p.143-147 from Q: Skills for Success: Reading and Writing 4, and the essay question (Identify the positive or negative effects that science has on the food we eat) comes directly from the unit in that textbook, although the essay itself is my own.

Write in the missing verbs:

There __________ few things in life that are more important than food.  For centuries, the primary goal of human civilization has __________ to create enough food to eat in order to feed all of its citizens.  However, in the past 200 years, the scientific revolution has completely __________ the way that food is produced.  Science has __________ many positive effects on the food that we eat as can be seen by looking at the increase in the variety of food, the increase in the amount of food, and the increase in nutrition worldwide.

The first beneficial effect of science __________ that there is a greater variety of food.  To begin with, we can now __________ a huge variety of flavors thanks to all the artificial flavors that can be created in laboratories.  A perfect example of an artificial flavor __________ blue raspberry, which is a popular flavor in candies and soft drinks, but which is not found anywhere in nature.  Variety __________ also increased through genetic engineering, which can __________ brand new fruits and vegetables.  One example of this __________ a recent new fruit scientists have __________ which__________ strawberries with bananas to make an entirely new kind of fruit.  Finally, the scientific revolution has __________ to advanced forms of transportation, which__________ for food to be __________ from all over the world.  For instance, shoppers at a supermarket in North America can now __________ fruit from tropical countries, even though that fruit is not native to the area.  As we have seen, because of artificial flavors, genetic engineering and imported food, science has __________ in a greater variety of food.

The second beneficial effect of science __________ an increase in the amount of food available.  To start out with, modern irrigation techniques have drastically __________ how much food farmers are able to grow.  Egypt, which has dramatically __________ its food production due to modern irrigation, is a great example of this.  Secondly, genetically modified plants have also __________ an increase in the food available.  It is __________ that genetically modified plants have __________ the amount of food available by as much as 20%.  Finally, science has __________ us to __________ food for longer periods of time thanks to preservatives.  An illustration of this is the common preservative sodium benzoate, which can __________ food from going bad for up to two years.  In conclusion, science has __________ the amount of food available due to irrigation, genetically modified crops, and preservatives.

The third beneficial effect that science has had is an increase in nutrition.  This can be seen firstly by looking at fortified food, which __________ extra nutrients added to it.  An illustration of fortified food is breakfast cereals, which __________ lots of extra vitamins and minerals __________ to them.  Secondly, science has __________ an increase in nutrition because people have __________ more knowledgeable about nutrition due to science.  200 years ago, no one __________ concerned about getting enough vitamins and minerals, but nowadays most educated people __________ about nutrition, and __________ which types of food to eat.  Finally, genetically modified foods __________ also increased nutrition.  To take one example, genetically modified rice has __________ vitamin A and D, which __________ the rice more nutritious.  So to sum up, fortified foods, increased nutritional knowledge and genetically modified foods have all resulted in an increase in nutrition worldwide due to science.

As we have seen, the effect of science has __________ to increase the variety of food, the amount of food, and the nutritional quality of food.  As a result of all of this, the food situation__________ better now than it has been at any other point in human history.  In the future, as science continues to __________ , I believe that we will __________ to see more beneficial effects on the food that we eat.

Introduction

There are few things in life that are more important than food.

For centuries, the primary goal of human civilization has been to create enough food to eat in order to feed all of its citizens.

However, in the past 200 years, the scientific revolution has completely changed the way that food is produced.

Science has had many positive effects on the food that we eat as can be seen by looking at the increase in the variety of food, the increase in the amount of food, and the increase in nutrition worldwide.

Body Paragraph 1

The first beneficial effect of science is that there is a greater variety of food.

To begin with, we can now get a huge variety of flavors thanks to all the artificial flavors that can be created in laboratories.

A perfect example of an artificial flavor is blue raspberry, which is a popular flavor in candies and soft drinks, but which is not found anywhere in nature.

Variety is also increased through genetic engineering, which can create brand new fruits and vegetables.

One example of this is a recent new fruit scientists have made which combines strawberries with bananas to make an entirely new kind of fruit.

Finally, the scientific revolution has led to advanced forms of transportation, which allows for food to be imported from all over the world.

For instance, shoppers at a supermarket in North America can now buy fruit from tropical countries, even though that fruit is not native to the area.

As we have seen, because of artificial flavors, genetic engineering and imported food, science has resulted in a greater variety of food.

Body Paragraph 2

The second beneficial effect of science is an increase in the amount of food available.

To start out with, modern irrigation techniques have drastically improved how much food farmers are able to grow.

Egypt, which has dramatically increased its food production due to modern irrigation, is a great example of this.

Secondly, genetically modified plants have also caused an increase in the food available.

It is estimated that genetically modified plants have increased the amount of food available by as much as 20%

Finally, science has allowed us to store food for longer periods of time thanks to preservatives.

An illustration of this is the common preservative sodium benzoate, which can prevent food from going bad for up to two years.

In conclusion, science has increased the amount of food available due to irrigation, genetically modified crops, and preservatives.

Body Paragraph 3

The third beneficial effect that science has had is an increase in nutrition.

This can be seen firstly by looking at fortified food, which has extra nutrients added to it.

An illustration of fortified food is breakfast cereals, which have lots of extra vitamins and minerals added to them.

Secondly, science has caused an increase in nutrition because people have become more knowledgeable about nutrition due to science.

200 years ago, no one was concerned about getting enough vitamins and minerals, but nowadays most educated people know about nutrition, and know which types of food to eat.

Finally, genetically modified foods have also increased nutrition.

To take one example, genetically modified rice has added vitamin A and D, which makes the rice more nutritious.

So to sum up, fortified foods, increased nutritional knowledge and genetically modified foods have all resulted in an increase in nutrition worldwide due to science.

Conclusion

As we have seen, the effect of science has been to increase the variety of food, the amount of food, and the nutritional quality of food.

As a result of all of this, the food situation is better now than it has been at any other point in human history.

In the future, as science continues to develop, I believe that we will continue to see more beneficial effects on the food that we eat.
