Past Perfect Continuous Dictogloss

(TESOL Worksheets--Past Perfect Continuous)
Dictogloss: docs, pub
Pictures: slides, pub
[I do this first as a dictogloss, and then give the students the answers and the timeline.  The timeline and the last sentence are from Concept Questions and Timelines by Graham Workman.  The rest of the dictogloss is my own.]

John and Sarah loved to go fishing in the lake.  They had been fishing for years, and never had any problems.  But one day, their boat started sinking.  They had been enjoying the afternoon, and never thought anything would happen.  Then John noticed that the boat had been filling up with water.  The boat sank into the water at 2 pm.  They called for help, but the rescue boat didn’t come until 4pm.  They had been swimming in the water for two hours when they were rescued.

1. When did they start swimming?

2. What time did they stop swimming?

3. How long were they swimming?

4. Did they stop swimming when they were rescued?

5. Were they rescued now or in the past?

6. Which happened first: they were swimming or they were rescued?

7, Did they swim for a long time?
