[I've mentioned role plays a couple of times before on this blog (here and here), but I've decided I want to make a separate post for it so that I can refer to it later.]
Role Plays would come during the freer practice stage of a grammar lesson.
Imagine a situation or conversation in which the target language is likely to be used. (For example: present perfect--a job interview in which the applicant is being asked about past experiences; future forms--a conversation with a high school guidance counselor about what you will do after graduating; modals of obligation--a parent telling her child the rules for borrowing the car, etc). Students are put into pairs, each student is given a role (e.g. parent, child) and they must act out this situation with their partner. For less structured role plays, it is not necessary to hand out role playing cards--simply telling the students the situation is often sufficient. But for more structured role plays, it is helpful to give each student a card which gives them the details of their character.
Below is an example of a role play:
[This is a pair work activity. One student is the job interviewer, the other student is the prospective employee. Both students are encouraged to use the present perfect for past experiences during the exercise. After completing the conversation, students are given the second set of cards, and switch roles.
After both role plays have been completed, each student is given a blank card in which they must decide on a job, and decide what experience they think is necessary for the job. They are given some time to write the necessary experience, and then at the end there is a mingling activity where they must talk to as many of their classmates as possible, and decide who is best qualified for their job. (In my experience, it's common for confusion to occur during the last phase of this activity, so it's probably best to model at least one example of choosing a job and deciding the necessary qualifications. Also during the mingling activity, sometimes students are told they don't necessarily have to give truthful answers when describing their experiences.]
