In the mid 80s if you wanted to take A History Of The Cold War in university you were expected to read A History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. So I'm just glad when someone else reads it.
Just to clarify, I'm reading The Peloponnesian War by Donald Kagan, not the original Thucydides. I'm still trying to work up my courage before I attempt Thucydides. Maybe you could help me. How did you find Thucydides? Would you recommend it?
Thucydides is its own thing, of course. Man, he's boring! I fell asleep multiple times to Thucydides. As the cure for insomnia I recommend Thucydides.
Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield came out just before Frank Miller's blunderbus. I recommend that, if you can handle the narrator being a POW. I didn't forewarn one reader -- boy, did I get shit on!
Just googled it now. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll keep my eyes open for it. (You never know what you'll find in the used bookstores out here. Sometimes you run across a treasure.)
