What do we think about Tariffs?
Okay, serious question here. (And by "serious question", I mean I'm not trying to be snarky or sarcastic about this, I'm genuinely confused and hope someone can clarify it for me.)
Since Trump has become big on tariffs recently, I've seen I don't know how many liberals on Youtube and Twitter, etc, make fun of how MAGA people don't understand what a tariff is:
Tariffs Explained to MAGA by a Professional Importer/Exporter
...all of a sudden it seems like being pro-tariff is conservative, and being anti-tariff is liberal.
But, what confuses me, is that I remember in the 1990s, being pro-free trade was conversative, and being anti-free trade was progressive.
Progressives were supposed to be in favor of fair trade. And what was fair trade? I thought fair trade would have involved using tariffs.
So what happened? Is this just a matter of liberals just dunking on whatever Trump supporters like? Or was there a political realignment that happened? Or maybe I'm seeing a split between the Clinton liberals and the true progressives, and the Clinton liberals are the ones making fun of the tariffs? Or is there something unique about the Trump tariffs? Or, are we liberals just making fun of the fact that MAGA people don't understand who pays tariffs, and we're not actually opposed to the tariffs themselves? Or are progressives supposed to be anti-tariff now?
