Matching Headings to Paragraphs

Sample: docs, pub

This is a common activity used in textbooks.
It is also a task type on the IELTS Reading test.
Students have to read a text, and then match each paragraph to the heading that best summarizes it.
It can, however, be made slightly more engaging (or at least more tactile) by photocopying the paragraphs and the headings, and then cutting them up and distributing them to groups, so that the students can physically place each heading on top of the paragraph that it belongs to.  (In my experience, this helps to break up the monotony of a reading lesson.)  Here's an example of that activity from Unit 8 Reading 2: Child's Play: It's Not Just for Fun p.220-226 from Q: Skills for Success: Reading and Writing 4 (Second Edition).
Another variation, also included in the sample linked to above, is for students to make their own headings, and then trade them with another group.  (This is somewhat similar to DIY Heading Match, but without the aspect of walking around the room.)

Yet another variation, for younger learners, is to match the paragraphs of a story to the pictures they describe. Obviously this requires using a textbook that has pictures.  But here is an example of that activity  from Unit 8 Reading p.88-89 from English World 2.
