The Animal Boogie--Lesson Plan

(TESOL Worksheets--Topic Lessons, Vocabulary)

Lesson Plan: docs, pub
Color Animals Sheet: docs, pub
(I was teaching a group of very young learners--around 4 years old--and a colleague helped me design a lesson around the Youtube song video The Animal Boogie.  Actually 2 lessons.  It needs to be supplemented by flashcards, but if you can find/make flashcards for the animals, you can use these lessons.)

The Animal Boogie

As kids filter in
Turn and learn ABCs--they guess the object.

Circle Time
2 circles.  Demo with T.A. first
Chant. (knee, knee, clap) “What’s your name? What’s your name? My name is....” etc.

Topic Lesson
The Animal Boogie
Play, and have them shout out the animals they can see whilst watching
Then, sit them back on blue
Introduce Vocab--first 4 animals

Repeat:
This is an elephant.  What can he do?  Can he fly?  (etc.) An elephant can stomp. (Do action with them--kids don’t say anything yet).

Group receptive
Islands--stick flashcards around the room.  Get the T.A.s to demo.  Put on music, students dance, stop music. “A monkey can swing”.  They all have to run over to the Monkey flashcard, and do the action that corresponds.  Repeat a few times.

Individual Receptive
Slap the board--two different teams (2 teams of 7).  Don’t need to say anything at this time.

Group productive
Sit them on blue.  Drill the sentences.
Silly drilling---quiet to loud.  high and low.  Angry and sad.
Extension--repeat if correct.  Only repeat if correct.

Individual productive
Musical chairs.  (keep the others involved--hold flashcard).  Kid that’s out says the flashcard.
Hold flashcard.  Kid who is out says it.  Whole class drilling afterwards.

Craft:
Print out coloring so all 4 are on one A3.  Do a color dictation.
Point to the monkey.  Color the monkey green.  What can a monkey do?

Last Song.
Let’s go to the zoo

Circle Time
2 circles.  Demo with T.A. first
Chant. (knee, knee, clap) “This is my nose.  This is my eye.” etc.

Topic Lesson
The Animal Boogie--only the 2nd half
Play, and have them shout out the animals they can see whilst watching
Then, sit them back on blue

Review the flashcards from yesterday.  Then introduce the last 2.  Encourage them not to produce it yet.  Just do the actions.

Group Receptive--Jump the Line
Have them line up in a vertical line.  This side is “yes”.  This side is “no”.
Check them “yes” or “no”--point...faster and faster
Run and hit the yes or no side.

Individual receptive
Slap the board, but with sticky boards.
Stick the flashcards up, and draw a circle around each one.  Their aim is to get within the circle

Group Productive
Drill… (focus on the new ones, but can review all of them).
Silly drilling

Wake the Teacher Game… pretend to sleep.  Class wakes you up by shouting.  T.A. holds cards.

Individual Productive
Duck, Duck Goose (difficult if they don’t know it) (don’t say “duck” say “A Monkey can swing”--teacher holds the flashcard that the student says)
Or musical bumps  (last one to sit down when the music stops is out)
Or Chinese whispers--2 teams of 7--me and the T.A. whisper to the kid at the back, pass on up.  Kid at the front picks up slapper, and then goes to the back of the queue--might have to repeat one of them, since there are 6 flashcards

Craft
Masques.  2 of each animal.  Color them and cut them out.

Once they are done, play the Jungle Boogie song again from the start.  When it’s the elephants time, the elephants come into the circle and stomp, and then go back, etc….
