2nd and 3rd Conditional: Video and Gapfill Worksheet
Worksheet: docs, pub
I used this video from Easy English when setting up the contrast between 2nd Conditional and 3rd Conditional.  The video itself contains a range of conditional tenses, but for this worksheet I focused only on the 2nd Conditional and 3rd Conditional, because those were my lesson aims.
The students first listen to the video for gist.  (example gist task: What is Sally's problem?).  Then I hand out the specific information questions.  Then students listen again for a gapfill, and then, on the last page of the worksheet, they check their understanding of the meaing.

You know, lately I’ve felt so out of shape, so I want to change my lifestyle. And I want to lose weight, too. If I hadn't gained so much weight, I would have been more energetic. I know you are an expert in this, so if you have any advice for me, I'll be happy to listen.

Well, if you didn't eat so many sweets any more, you would definitely lose weight.

You're right. I have been eating too many sweets lately, almost every day. And I know that if you eat too many sweets, you gain weight.

You should also try to avoid junk food. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. you will not get enough vitamins if you don't eat fresh fruit.

3rd Conditional Story

(TESOL Worksheets--3rd Conditional, Made Up Model Text)

Google: docs, pub
[Procedure: Students are put in pairs, and are given a copy of the model text which is cut up and shuffled.  Students have to put the model text in order.  When they get it correct, the teacher approves, and then removes the cut up version, and gives them a version with the target language blanked out.  Students must fill in the missing words, either from memory, or using a running dictation.  (The full version of the model text is placed outside the room.)]

“Simon, wake up!” called his mother.  “You’re late for school!”

Simon looked at the clock.  It was 9 a.m.  His alarm was supposed to have gone off at 7 a.m.  What happened?  “Oh no!”  Simon thought.  “I forgot to set my alarm last night.  If I had set my alarm, I wouldn’t have overslept.”

Simon ran out the door without even eating breakfast or taking his umbrella.  As he was on his way to school, it started raining.  Simon didn’t have his umbrella with him, so he got soaking wet.  “If I had remembered my umbrella, then I wouldn’t have gotten wet,” Simon thought to himself.

Finally, Simon arrived at school, and the teacher yelled at him for being late.  “If I had arrived early, the teacher wouldn’t have yelled at me,” Simon thought sadly.

“Alright class,” said the teacher.  “Put away your books.  It’s time for the test.”

Simon panicked.  “I didn’t know we had a test!” he said.

“I told you about the test yesterday,” said the teacher.  “But you weren’t listening.  If you had listened to me, then you would have known about the test.”

Simon took the test, but because he hadn’t studied, he didn’t know any of the questions.  He didn’t get any questions right.  “If I had studied, then I would have done better on the test,” Simon thought sadly.

In the afternoon, Simon tried to study at school, but he was so hungry that he couldn’t study.

When he got home, his mother asked him, “How was school?”

“I couldn’t study because I was so hungry,” said Simon.

“Well, I’m not surprised,” said his mother.  “You didn’t eat breakfast.  If you had eaten breakfast, then you wouldn’t have been hungry at school.  And if you hadn’t been hungry at school, then you would have been able to study.”

“I know,” said Simon.  “This all started because I forgot to set my alarm last night.  If I had remembered to set my alarm, then I wouldn’t have overslept.  If I hadn’t overslept, then I wouldn’t have forgotten to eat breakfast.  If I hadn’t forgotten to eat breakfast, then I wouldn’t have been hungry at school.  And if I hadn’t been hungry at school, then I would have been able to study.  So tonight, I will definitely remember to set my alarm before bed.”

Around the Room Memory Game

(TESOL Ideas--Any Grammar Point, 3rd Conditional)
Google: docs, pub

[Notes: I'm in the process of revising my workshop on "Activities that Can be Used for Any Grammar Point".  Before posting the whole thing, I'm going to post some of the activities separately.  This is an activity that I believe can be used with any grammar point, but the example here is 3rd conditional.]

Around the Room Memory Game (Materials: none) (Preparation: 0)
Start at the beginning of the room.  One student says a sentence containing the target language.  The next student has to remember the previous sentence, and then add their own sentence.  Each successive student has to remember all the sentences that came previously, plus add their own sentence.
Variation: Circle Writing
A similar idea, but done with writing.  The first sentence writes one sentence on a piece of paper, and then passes it along to the student next to him, who continues the story (using the same target grammar).  Example: All the things I’m going to do when I grow up (going to future), all the things I would have done if I gone to America last year (3rd conditional)

1st Student: “If I had overslept, I would have been late to school.”
2nd student: “If I had overslept, I would have been late to school and my dad would have gotten angry.”
3rd student: “If I had overslept, I would have been late to school, my dad would have gotten angry, and I would have missed breakfast.”

4th student: “If I had overslept, I would have been late to school, my dad would have gotten angry, I would have missed breakfast, and I would have felt hungry.”

3rd Conditional Brainstorm Activity

(TESOL Worksheets--3rd Conditional)

Google: drivedocspub

Put students into groups.  Cut this sheet into 4 different sheets, and only give them one prompt at a time.  Give them a prompt, and give them a set time (2 minutes?) to come up with as many sentence endings as possible.  Then award points to the group with the most endings at the end of the time.  Then give them the next prompt.

In my own classes, I used this to supplement Life Intermediate Textbook, lesson 12B The Man Who Ate His Boots p.144-145
