(Movie Review)

My History with this Franchise

          I saw both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick back in the day, although I’ve largely forgotten them now.

The Review

          A throwback to trashy pulp science fiction of an earlier era, but one that’s competently done and manages to hit all the right beats.  (Mostly.  Some of the attempts at humor are cringe worthy, but other than that…)

            Doubtless it will appear to genre fans only, but if you are a fan of pulp sci-fi (and I am), then this is a very pleasant waste of time.  Absolutely no redeeming social value, of course, but then you knew that going in.

          I’m not the first person to make this comparison, but in many ways the Riddick series is Conan the Barbarian set in space.  In particular I was struck by how, like Conan, Riddick’s adventures take him from barbarian to ruler to back to barbarian again.

          This Avclub review was what prompted me to watch this movie in the first place. And after having watched the movie, I can say I’m in complete agreement with the review.

Rating :

7 out of 10 Stars.  (Based purely on watchability factor, and not on how memorable this movie is going to be in the long run.)
