"The Grand Canyon does not exist in Idaho" -- pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? You're right about the thrill factor, though. The older daughter was talking about it just the other night, recalling it as the first movie she went gaga for. She still thinks it's fun.
It's just a hunch, but I suspect these three movies kept Star Trek alive, just by reinventing the aesthetic. Discovery adopted it wholesale. Haven't seen Picard yet, so maybe that's an outlier and independent of the reboot. But Discovery is certainly riffing off the reboot, and not just in the "looks" department -- the plotting is absolutely bonkers. It lost me in the first two episodes, and everything I've read since just reaffirms an adherence to the J.J. Abrams' School of Writing.
BTW, I don't know what the numbers on DS9's finale were, but was under the impression they were respectable if not quite what TNG achieved. I still regard DS9 as the best of the Star Treks.
Re: DS9. Yeah, you're right. I mean, I still haven't seen the last few seasons, but it does have a reputation as ending strong. I don't know what I was thinking when I said it had petered out.
I haven't been able to watch Star Trek Discovery either. Couldn't make it through the first season, for pretty much the same reason as you. The plot was just all over the place.
Picard would be interesting to check out one of these days. No free time for me anytime soon, unfortunately...
