Slaughterhouse-5 is the least interesting book of Vonnegut that I shall always recommend people to read his other novels before they bother with this book at all. Comparatively speaking - since this isn't a bad book at all. It's typical Vonnegut. But once you finished it you just don't feel like you have digested anything at all.
I recommend people to read Mother Night and Cat's Cradle. Western readers may already got fed up with the incessant talks about Nazi history, in which case just read Cat's Cradle.
Alongside Flower for Algernon, those mentioned books are the very ones that have trained me greatly in my journey of reading literature in English. They should always be on top of the list of books recommended to ESL learners.
Other than commenting how American the novels of Vonnegut are, I have no further comment.
Trivia: the idea of ice-9 in Cat's Cradle was borrowed by a Japanese game maker as well.
