Neighborhood Vocabulary

[Note: These are all materials that I used to supplement the lesson 22 The Neighborhood p.58-59 from Oxford Picture Dictionary Content Areas for Kids, and the specific choice of vocabulary in the storybook is influenced by that lesson.   But I believe this material could also be used independently for any lesson on place vocabulary, so I'm posting it here.]


Target vocabulary: house, apartment building, street, street sign, address, 

Sidewalk, corner, streetlight, stop sign, fence, park, bench


Content objective: learn the names of objects in the neighborhood

Language objective: practice spelling and letter sounds

Lead-in

Slide 1 on the slideshow.  Elicit from students what the slide is.  (Or if necessary, give answer).  Ask students what things are in a neighborhood.  Students talk briefly with a partner.  Then whole class feedback.

Present Vocabulary (language from a text)

10:35-10:45

Gemini Storybook  (on slideshow).  Read through the storybook.  As the target vocabulary comes up, check with students to ensure they are noticing it.

Clarification and practice

10:45-10:55

Write the first letter.  Clarify the animals on the sheet with students, and sound out the first letter of each word.  Students write first letter on the sheet.

Time allowing

10:55 to end

Display page 58-59 on the white board.  Get students to find and circle the target vocabulary.  (Students can circle on their photocopy as well.)
