"Alan Rickman is one of the greatest under-rated actors" I wrote back in 2006.  And I meant it.  He never really got his full due for all his great performances.

This was shocking news to me. Bowie's death was, also, but not nearly the left-field surprise that Rickman's death was -- Bowie's late reclusive behaviour signalled health woes, I thought. Rickman just ... died.

And no Academy Award -- ever. Seems insane. When he appeared in a movie, you knew that at the very least he would be worth watching. Such a shame.

agreed

I think the role that really brought him to my attention was as Valera in "Michael Collins". After that movie, i started to notice him more in whatever he was in. He did a great job in everything.

I lined up for Die Hard back in the day, and thought this guy could probably do anything. Saw Truly, Madly, Deeply the next summer, which pretty much confirmed it. Not sure I could watch the Minghella movie again. It felt visceral back then, when I was at an age that could absorb almost anything on a screen.
