Star Wars Movie Worksheets: The Lexical Approach: Unfinished

(Movie Worksheets)

Google Drive Folder HERE

I am now several months behind on my book review project (I've been distracted by several things these past few months), but one book that I've read recently and will be reviewing eventually is The Lexical Approach by Michael Lewis (A).  In that book, Michael Lewis argues that the key to advancing in a language is not increasing your grammatical knowledge, but increasing your word power.
I was attracted to the arguments Lewis made, and began to think about how I might redesign a lot of my material to emphasize vocabulary.  Particularly, I thought of much of my material designed to give learners more comprehensible input, and thought about how I could redesign it to focus the students' attention on learning new vocabulary.
These Star Wars movie worksheets were one of the first things I thought of.  When I had originally designed them last year, I thought of them as primarily a useful way to get students to notice grammatical structures that might be at their level of acquisition.  (This was the purpose of recycling 10 sentences back to the students on the worksheet after every segment.)
In writing up the summaries of each episode, I purposely tried to avoid a lot of the vocabulary that I thought would be unfamiliar to the students.
However, after having read The Lexical Approach, I now thought that this had been a wasted opportunity.  I should have been using the movie to introduce new vocabulary every lesson.
So, when I got the opportunity to re-use these movie worksheets with a new class, I decided to redesign them to emphasize vocabulary.  For each segment I picked out 10 words that I thought the students were unlikely to know.  (I followed the principle I thought was implied in The Lexical Approach which was to assume all word knowledge was increased communicative power, and did not worry too much about whether the words were high frequency or low frequency.)
I re-designed the worksheets to include these new words.
Also, since I am now at a school that emphasizes PowerPoint, I designed a PowerPoint presentation to introduce all the new vocabulary, and also to go over the answers following the movie.

However, the worksheets, as I'm posting them now, are unfinished.  The reason is because my students absolutely hated, hated, hated this movie, and after we got through the first 36 minutes, I decided to just abort the project.

I had good success using Star Wars last year with my previous students (aged 11-14).  But when I tried to introduce this movie to a new group of students (aged 10-12), they balked at it.  The beginning scene caught their attention, but then the story slowed down significantly when the action moved to the farm on Tatooine, and my students completely lost patience with it.

In light of this experience, I have been reluctantly forced to revise my previous opinion--that Star Wars is a timeless classic--in favor of a new opinion--that the pacing and action of the original Star Wars is boring and sluggish to the new generation of kids.
I have had it in mind now to write a comprehensive post detailing all my thoughts on the Star Wars movies.  (Something I hope to do before the new chapter comes out in December).  And if I do finally get around to it, I'll try and examine in more detail which aspects of the original Star Wars are dated, and which ones still hold up.

...In the meantime, these are my unfinished revised Star Wars worksheets.  They're not completed, but they hopefully represent the kind of revision I had in mind to do for these worksheets in order to emphasize vocabulary learning.
The PowerPoints are on Google:  Part 1: Drive, Slides, Pub, Part 2: drive, slides, pub, and Part 3: drive, docs, pub.

In the vehicle, there were all kinds of strange robots that the Jawas had captured.  Inside this big vehicle, R2D2 saw his old ______________ C3P0.  The two robots were now together again.
Meanwhile, the stormtroopers were searching the planet, looking for the plans.  They found the escape ship.  “Someone was in the pod.  The ______________ go off in this direction,” said one stormtrooper.  Another stormtrooper found something metal.  "Look sir, Droids," he said.  (Droid means a kind of robot.)  The stormtroopers then ______________ that the Droids had the plans they were looking for.

The family was the Skywalker family.  There were three ______________: Luke Skywalker, and his Uncle Owen, and Aunt Beru.  Uncle Owen went to look at the robots, while Aunt Beru called to Luke.  “Luke!  Luke!  Tell your uncle that if he gets a translator to make sure it speaks Bocce.”

Luke was angry because he couldn't meet his friends.  "It just isn't ______________," Luke said to C3P0.  Luke wanted to leave the farm and find adventure, but he couldn't because Uncle Owen needed him on the farm.
"Is there ______________ I might do to help?" C3P0 asked.  Luke told him no, there was nothing he could do, unless C3P0 could help him off this planet.
C3P0 responded that he couldn’t, and added, “As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure which ______________ I’m on.”
"Well, if there's a bright center to the ______________, you're on the planet that it's farthest from," Luke answered.

Luke was excited.  “You know of the rebellion against the ______________?  Have you been in many ______________?”
“Several, I think,” C3P0 responded.  “Actually, there's not much to tell. I'm not much more than an ______________, and not very good at telling stories.”

Talk with a partner.  What do you think is going to happen in the next part of the movie?

Answers:
R2D2 was travelling alone down the road.  He heard some strange sounds, and began to get worried.  Suddenly, he was attacked by the Jawas.  (The Jawas were short creatures dressed in robes and with shining eyes.)  The Jawas stunned R2D2 with a special gun, and loaded him onto their huge vehicle.
In the vehicle, there were all kinds of strange robots that the Jawas had captured.  Inside this big vehicle, R2D2 saw his old friend C3P0.  The two robots were now together again.
Meanwhile, the stormtroopers were searching the planet, looking for the plans.  They found the escape ship.  “Someone was in the pod.  The tracks go off in this direction,” said one stormtrooper.  Another stormtrooper found something metal.  "Look sir, Droids," he said.  (Droid means a kind of robot.)  The stormtroopers then knew that the Droids had the plans they were looking for.
Meanwhile, the Jawas' vehicle arrived at a farm.  The Jawas wanted to sell the robots to the family there.  " Do you think they’ll melt us down? Will this never end?" C3P0 asked to R2D2.
The family was the Skywalker family.  There were three people: Luke Skywalker, and his Uncle Owen, and Aunt Beru.  Uncle Owen went to look at the robots, while Aunt Beru called to Luke.  “Luke!  Luke!  Tell your uncle that if he gets a translator to make sure it speaks Bocce.”
“Doesn’t look like we have much choice, but I’ll remind him,” Luke said.
Uncle Owen bought C3P0, and another robot.  But the other robot broke, so C3P0 recommended his friend R2D2.  "I've worked with him before," C3P0 told Luke.
Luke told his uncle.  "Uncle Owen, what about that one?"
"Well take that one," said Uncle Owen to the Jawa.
So Uncle Owen bought R2D2 as well.  "Don't you forget this," C3P0 said to R2D2.  “Why I should stick my neck out for you is quite beyond my capacity.”
Uncle Owen told Luke, "Take these two to the garage.  I want them cleaned up before dinner."  Luke was not happy, because he wanted to meet his friends.  "You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done," Uncle Owen said.
Luke was angry because he couldn't meet his friends.  "It just isn't fair," Luke said to C3P0.  Luke wanted to leave the farm and find adventure, but he couldn't because Uncle Owen needed him on the farm.
"Is there anything I might do to help?" C3P0 asked.  Luke told him no, there was nothing he could do, unless C3P0 could help him off this planet.
C3P0 responded that he couldn’t, and added, “As a matter of fact, I’m not even sure which planet I’m on.”
"Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from," Luke answered.
          "I see, sir," C3P0 responded.
"You can call me Luke," said Luke.
"I see, sir Luke," C3P0 said.
          Luke laughed.  "No, just Luke."
Luke was cleaning R2D2, and he noticed how dirty the robots were.  “It looks like you boys have seen a lot of action,” he said.
“With all we’ve been through, sometimes I'm amazed we're in as good condition as we are, what with the Rebellion and all,” C3P0 responded.
Luke was excited.  “You know of the rebellion against the Empire?  Have you been in many battles?”
“Several, I think,” C3P0 responded.  “Actually, there's not much to tell. I'm not much more than an interpreter, and not very good at telling stories.”
Luke accidentally pushed a button on R2D2, and a video projection started playing.  It was Princess Leia.  "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi," she said.  "You're my only hope."
"Who is she?" Luke asked.  "She's beautiful."
Luke said he didn't know anyone named Obi-Wan Kenobi.  But there was an old man named Ben Kenobi, who lived alone.  "Could they be related?"  Luke wondered.
Luke wanted to see the whole message.  But R2D2 said he couldn't play the whole message, because of the restraining bolt.  (A restraining bolt was something the Jawas had put on R2D2 to stop him from running away.)
"I suppose you're too small to run away," Luke said, and he took off the restraining bolt.  But even after the restraining bolt was taken off, R2D2 didn't play the whole message.  Then Luke was called away to dinner by Aunt Beru.
"Just you reconsider playing that message for him," C3P0 said to R2D2.  R2D2 beeped a question.  "No, I don't think he likes you at all," C3P0 answered.  R2D2 beeped again.  "No, I don't like you either," C3P0 said.  R2D2 beeped sadly.

"What makes you think that?" asked Uncle Owen.
"I found a recording while I was cleaning him," Luke said.  "He says he belongs to someone __________________  Obi-Wan Kenobi.  I thought he might mean old Ben Kenobi.  Do you know __________________  he's talking about?"
"That old man is just a crazy wizard," said Uncle Owen.  "Tomorrow, I want you to have the memory of that robot erased.  That'll be the end of it.  He belongs to us now."
"But what if this Obi-Wan comes looking for him?" Luke asked.
"He won't," said Uncle Owen.  "I don't think he exists anymore.  He died about the same __________________ as your father."
"He knew my father?" Luke asked.
"I __________________  you to forget it," Uncle Owen said.
So Luke changed the subject.  He told Uncle Owen he wanted to go away to the academy next year.  (An academy is a type of school.)  But Uncle Owen said that Luke couldn't leave the farm.  "You must __________________  I need you here, Luke," Uncle Owen said.
Luke left the dinner table angrily.  Aunt Beru looked at Uncle Owen.  "Owen, he __________________  stay here forever," Aunt Beru said.  "Most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him.  Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him."
"That's what I'm __________________  of," said Uncle Owen.
Luke went down to the garage.  C3P0 was hiding in the dark.  "What are you __________________  hiding back there?" Luke asked.
C3P0 was scared.  "It's not my fault, sir," he said.  "I told him not to go.  But he kept __________________  about his mission."
"Oh no!" Luke said.  R2D2 had run away.
Luke ran outside to look for R2D2.  "He's nowhere in sight.  How could I have been so stupid?"
"Pardon me sir," said C3P0.  "But couldn't we go after him?"
"No, it's too dangerous at night with all the sand people around," Luke said.  "We'll have to wait until morning."  Luke was worried because he thought Uncle Owen would blame him for losing R2D2.
Early the next morning, Uncle Owen was looking for Luke.  "Have you __________________  Luke this morning?" Uncle Owen asked to Aunt Beru.
Meanwhile, Luke and C3P0 were looking for R2D2.  They didn't know that the Sand People were already watching them from the hills.
They found R2D2.  But R2D2 was beeping nervously.  "What's wrong __________________  him now?" Luke asked.
"He says several creatures are approaching from the Southeast," C3P0 said.
"Sand People!" Luke exclaimed.  "Come on, let's have a look."  Luke and C3P0 went to a hill to look for Sand People.  At first, they couldn't see any Sand People.  And then, Luke said, "Wait, I can see one of __________________  now."  Suddenly, they were attacked by a Sand Person.  Luke was knocked to the ground.
Meanwhile, R2D2 was hiding behind some rocks.  He saw the Sand People arrive carrying Luke.  Luke was unconscious.  ("Unconscious" means he wasn't awake.)
Then, a strange man came, and frightened the Sand People away.  The man took off his hood, and showed his face.  He saw R2D2 hiding behind the rock.  "Hello there! Come here my little friend. Don't be __________________," the man said.  "Don't worry.  He'll be alright."
Luke woke up.  He recognized the old man.  "Ben? Ben Kenobi! Boy, am I __________________  to see you!" Luke said.
"Tell me young Luke, what brings you out this far?" asked the old man.
"This little robot," Luke answered.  "He's searching for his master; a man named Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is he a relative of yours? Do you know who he's talking about?"
The old man was surprised.  "Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Obi-Wan? Now that's a name I've not __________________  in a long time. A long time."
"I think my uncle knew him," said Luke.  "My uncle said he was dead."
"Oh, he's not dead. Not yet," said the old man.
               "You know him?" asked Luke.
"Well of course, I know him," said the old man.  "He's __________________! I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since before you were born."
Luke went to Obi-Wan Kenobi's house with the robots.
Obi-Wan Kenobi told Luke about his father.
"My father didn't fight in the wars," said Luke.
"That's what your uncle told you," said Obi-Wan Kenobi.  "Your father was a Jedi Knight.  He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior.  And a good friend."  Then Obi-Wan said, "I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it."  It was a lightsaber--the weapon of the Jedi Knights.
"How did my father die?" asked Luke.
"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a student of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father," answered Obi-Wan.
Then, R2D2 played the message for Obi-Wan.  It was a video of Princess Leia.
"General Kenobi," said Princess Leia, "Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him again.  I have put important plans into this robot R2D2.   My father will __________________  what to do.  You must bring this robot safely to him on Alderaan.  Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only __________________."
"You must learn the ways of the Force if you're to come with me to Alderaan," Obi-Wan told Luke.
"Alderaan? I'm not going to Alderaan," said Luke.  "I've got to go home. It's late.  I'm going to be in trouble already."
"I need your __________________, Luke," said Obi-Wan.  "She needs your help. I'm getting too __________________  for this sort of thing."
"I can't go," Luke said.  "It's too far away.  My Uncle needs me on the farm.  Look, I can take you to the city of Anchorhead.  You can get transportation there.  But I can't go any further."
