Modal Verb Story

(TESOL Worksheets--Modal Verbs)
Google: drive, docs, pub
[Students are divided into small groups of 3 or 4, and must race the other groups to complete the task.  The task is divided into several parts.  Firstly, students are given a conversation between Jack and Rich, but they are given the conversation in small strips of paper that have been cut up and shuffled into a random order, and they must put the conversation into the correct order.
Once the students have the conversation in the correct order, and the teacher has checked it, the teacher removes the conversation strips from their desk, and gives them the next task.  The next task is the same conversation, but with all the modal verbs missing.  Students must fill in the modal verbs from memory.  If they can not remember all the words, an answer sheet is placed outside of the classroom.  However each group can only send one person at a time outside of the classroom to look at the answer sheet.  This person can bring no pencil or paper with them, and must only remember in their head before coming back to report to their group.  The first group to finish both tasks is the winner.]

Jack: I'm going on a trip to the country of Fabulae.  What do I need to do?
Rich:  What do you mean?
Jack: Like do I need to bring anything?

Rich:  Well, you can buy most things there, so you don't really have to bring anything. But remember it's a cold country, so you should pack plenty of warm clothes.
Jack: Do I need to have a visa?

Rich: Yes.  In  fact you should have gotten that taken care of weeks ago.  When is your trip?
Jack: Next week.
Rich: Well, you might still have time then.
Jack: Do I have to get any medicine before I go?

Rich: Well, you don't have to.  But it's not a bad idea.  You probably should take some malaria medicine with you just in case.  But remember, you can buy everything you need over there, so you don't have to worry too much about anything.
Jack: I'm planning on going hunting over there, so can I bring my gun with me?

Rich: No! You must never bring a gun on a plane.  If you want to do some shooting, you can join a hunting club while you're over there, and you can rent rifles from the club.
Jack: Okay, thanks for the advice.  Buy the way, what should I get you while I'm over there?

Rich: Oh, you don't have to get me anything.  You know that.
Jack: I know I don't have to buy you something.  But I want to buy you something.

Rich: The prices are pretty expensive over there.  If you want to buy me something, you should buy me a present before you go.
Jack: Don't be silly.  I want to get you a souvenir from the trip.  I've already decided.  If you absolutely had to accept a gift from me, what would you like?

Rich: Well, in that case, if I have to accept your gift, why don't you bring me back some food.
Jack:  Can I take food back through customs?

Rich: You can, but you must make sure it's still wrapped in the original container.  You mustn't open the food before you get to customs  And you shouldn't buy anything that will spoil easily, because it will be a long flight.
Jack: Okay.  Thanks for the advice.  See you when I get back.
