Stages of a Reading Lesson

[Note: it is not possible or desirable to do all of these stages in a single lesson.  This simply represents a range of options that can be used for a reading text.  The activities are listed in the order that they should be done in class--i.e. you can omit activities, but don't change the order of activities.]

Pre-Reading

2. Orientation to the text

3. Pre-Teach Vocabulary (This can also be moved to after the gist task)

4. Prediction 

Reading

5. Gist Task or Prediction and Check (possibly done as listen and read, put the paragraphs in order, matching heading to paragraphs, matching paragraphs to pictures)

6. Finding Specific Information (e.g. scanning race game, garbage man, quizziz, Baamboozle)

7. Understanding the text for Detailed Comprehension

8. Understanding Inferences in the text

9. Personalization (Students' own opinions about the text)

Post Reading

10. Bonus activities (e.g. faulty printer, student editors, running dictation, wrong words, Paraphrase Recognition Race, Paragraph Reconstruction, Match the Sentences in the Paragraph to their Function, Write in the Missing Verbs, Find the Missing Sentence)

11. Exploit the text for grammar or vocabulary work

12. Communicative Follow-up (discussion questions, Retell the Story from a different Perspective)
