Using English

(TESOL Worksheets--Classroom Management)
Google: docs, pub
[Notes: I designed this for a group of L1 Vietnamese students.  With some small adjustments, it could be used for other L1 speakers--i.e. just make a copy of the form, and change "Vietnamese" to the relevant L1.
This was designed for a class who were, according to the rules of the school, supposed to use English as a means of communication during classroom activities, but who were not intrinsically motivated to use English, and kept reverting back to their L1.
After trying various ways to encourage them to speak English, I developed this system.  A student caught speaking Vietnamese in class would be given a sheet of paper, and have to write down what they said in Vietnamese and attempt to translate it.  As soon as I get a free moment in the classroom, I sit down with them and help them work out what they meant to say.  We drill it orally briefly, and then they write it in their vocabulary notebook.  The technique is designed to be half-deterrent (the students often find it to be unwanted attention or extra work, and so it discourages the use of L1) and half supportive (I think the students do sometimes benefit from being helped to find the English words.)
I should add that I'm well-aware the current consensus in the literature is that L1 use in the classroom should be allowed, but in my experience what's in the literature doesn't always match the policies of language schools.  I myself have gone back and forth on the issue several times, and could write a whole separate post on all my thoughts about the advantages and disadvantages of enforcing an English only policy.  But I'll save that for another day, and for now just leave this as a resource in case others want it.]
