Describe a Room: Speaking Lesson

(TESOL Worksheets--Speaking)
Listening: docs, pub
Slideshow: slides, pub
[Notes: The object of the lesson is for students to describe a room.  I start off by reading a description of my own apartment.  The students listen to the description, and answer a gist question (How many items do I mention?).  Then, the students listen a second time to my description, and attempt to draw a picture.  They compare their picture with a partner.  Then, I give them the script of the listening with some of the function words gapped out.  The students attempt to fill in the gaps.  They check with a partner, and then I read my description one more time and they listen and check.
The students then take turns describing their own rooms to their partner.  The partner listens and draws.
As an extension activity, I've collected some pictures of rooms from the Internet.  (All the images are taken from a Google image search, and none of them are my own design.)  Images are projected on the white board.  Students sit so that one partner has their back facing the whiteboard and cannot see the image, and one partner can see the image.  The partner that can see the image describes it to the other, who draws a picture.  When the time is up, they compare their picture to the image on the white board, and then we switch partners.
In my class, I used this activity to supplement Life Elementary Textbook lesson 2B At Home p.24-25]

I live in a one-bedroom apartment.  When you walk in the door, the kitchen is _____ the right-hand side.  _____ is a refrigerator, a stove, an oven, and a sink.  On the left-hand side, there _____ the kitchen table, where we eat our meals.  Moving further towards the back of the room, on the far right hand corner there is a sofa.  Directly opposite the sofa _____ a TV.  Behind the TV there is _____ bookcase.  Behind the bookcase, in the far left-hand corner is the bed.  Next _____ the bed is the baby’s crib.  _____ is also a small desk next to the bed where we keep some important papers, and some supplies for cleaning.
