The Empire Strikes Back Movie Worksheets

(Movie Worksheets)
Google drive Folder HERE
[And here I am with The Empire Strikes Back.  Much of what I said for the Star Wars worksheets holds true here as well.  As with before, I've relied heavily on the online version of the transcript [LINK HERE] to reconstruct the dialogue in the review sections.  In cases where the online transcript was slightly different than what the actors actually said in the movie, I tried to change it to what the actors actually said, in all the cases where I noticed it.  Undoubtedly there were some places I didn't notice it.
As with before, there was a tension between the desire to simplify the dialogue for the students, and the desire to reproduce the authentic dialogue "as is", and as with before I made some judgement calls in which I may have erred on either side of the equation--sometimes I might have simplified too much, sometimes I might have preserved the original when I should have simplified.  (These worksheets were aimed at students studying out of a B1 textbook in the Common European Framework.  Although I didn't think it was necessary for them to understand every single word.)
Because the aim of showing movies in class is to provide students with model language for acquisition, I have taken the liberty of fixing Yoda's grammar on the review sheets.  (Whatever ungrammatical utterances he says in the movie couldn't be helped, and will probably do minimal harm to the students, but I saw no point in recycling this ungrammatical language back to them on the review sheets.)
The goal was to do 10-15 minutes a day, but at certain points it was necessary to go slightly longer because the movie didn't offer good places for breaks.  The last part in particular is the longest at about 23 minutes.
It probably goes without saying this movie is only intended to be watched after first watching Star Wars, and the first worksheet features a review of the main characters from Star Wars.
As with before, these worksheets reflect the changes Lucas made to the dialogue for the DVD editions  (e.g.  "You were lucky to get out of there" instead of "You're lucky you don't taste good")--not because I think the changes are an improvement over the original dialogue, but just because this seems to be the only version available.

The Empire Strikes Back Part 1 (00:00--12:57)

Descriptions:

1. ______________________: At one time, he was Obi-Wan Kenobi's student.  But he turned to evil, and turned against Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Obi-Wan Kenobi told Luke that this person betrayed and murdered his father.  This person now works for the evil Galactic Empire.  Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, he knows how to use the "Force".  With this power, he can sense things with his mind, and sometimes move things with his thoughts.

2. ______________________: These are the soldiers of the Galactic Empire.  There are very many of them.

3. ______________________: She is a princess, and one of the leaders of the rebellion against the Galactic Empire.  She's very beautiful.  Both Luke and Han are in love with her.

4. ______________________:  He was a master of the Force.  He used to be the teacher of Darth Vader, and the friend of Luke's father.  He disappeared during his last fight with Darth Vader.  However, sometimes Luke can still hear his voice.  Luke calls him "Ben," but Darth Vader knows him by his older name.

5. ______________________: He is a robot.  (In the Star Wars movies, the robots are called "droids".)  He can speak in English.  He is a translator, which means he can understand many languages.  Sometimes he is called "3PO" for short.

6. ______________________:  He is a Wookie.  A Wookie is a type of creature that is very big and hairy.  He can talk only in growls.  But somehow, Han can understand everything he says.  He is a very good pilot, and he is Han's first mate on the ship.  Sometimes he is called "Chewie" for short.

7. ______________________: He is a pilot of a ship called the Millennium Falcon.  Before he met Luke and Leia, he didn't care about anyone except himself.  Now, he is beginning to change.  He used to be a smuggler.  (A "smuggler" is someone who hides things in his ship for money.)  He is in big trouble, because he owes a lot of money to a gangster named Jabba the Hutt.  If he doesn't pay this money back to Jabba, Jabba will kill him.  Jabba has already sent many men (called "bounty hunters") to try to catch him.

8. ______________________: He used to be a young farm boy from the countryside, before he discovered a secret message hidden in R2D2.  Now, he has joined the rebellion against the Empire.  He is also in training to be a Jedi knight, like his father was.  He is learning to use the Force--to sense things with his mind, and sometimes move objects with his mind.  However, his teacher, Obi-Wan Kenobi, has now disappeared.

9. ______________________: He is another robot (or "droid" in the Star Wars universe).  He can't speak English, but he can speak by making beeping noises.  Somehow, C3P0 can always understands what he is saying.  Sometimes he is called "R2" for short.

Luke Skywalker was on an ice-planet.  He was on patrol.  ("Patrol" means to watch everything to make sure the area is safe.)
He __________________ Han Solo on his radio.  "Han old buddy, do you read me?"
"Loud and clear, kid.  What's up?" said Han.
"Well, I finished my circle.  I don't pick up any life readings," said Luke.
"There isn't enough life on this ice cube to fill a space cruiser," said Han.  "I'm going back."
"Right," said Luke.  "I'll see you __________________.  There's a meteorite that hit the ground near here.  I want to check it out.  It won't __________________  long."  (A "meteorite" is a rock that falls to the ground from outer space.)
As soon as Luke had finished talking to Han, his animal started to get nervous.  "Hey, steady girl.  What's the matter?  Do you smell __________________?"
Suddenly, a monster appeared and attacked Luke.
Meanwhile, Han returned to the rebel base.  Chewbacca was busy repairing Han's ship.  Chewbacca was getting very frustrated, and yelled at Han.  "All right," Han replied.  "Don't __________________  your temper.  I'll come right back and __________________  you a hand."
Han went to report to the general.  (A "general" is someone who is in a high position in the army.)  "General," Han said, "I've got to leave.  I can't stay __________________."
"I'm sorry to __________________  that," the general answered.
"Well, there's a price on my head," Han said.  "If I don't pay off Jabba the Hut, I'm a dead man."
"A death mark is not an easy thing to live with," the general agreed.  "You're a good fighter, Solo.  I hate to lose you."
            "Thank you general," Han said.
Han next went to talk to Princess Leia.  "Well your Highness, I guess this is it," Han said.
            "That's right," Princess Leia answered.
Han waited for Princess Leia to say more.  Han wanted her to say more.  When she didn't say anything more, Han got angry.  "Well don't get all mushy on me," Han said sarcastically.  "So long Princess."
Han walked away.  Princess Leia followed him.  "Han!" she yelled, "I thought you __________________  decided to stay."
"Well the bounty hunter we ran into changed my mind," Han responded.  (A "bounty hunter" is someone who tries to capture other people for money.  Jabba the Hutt had sent many bounty hunters to try to capture Han.)
"Han, we need you," Princess Leia said.
            "We need?" said Han.
            "Yes," said Leia.
"Well what about you need?" Han said.
            "I need?  I don't know __________________  you're talking about," Leia said.
"You probably don't," said Han, and he walked away.
"And what precisely am I supposed to know?" asked Leia, following Han.
"Come on!" said Han.  "You want me to stay because of the way you feel __________________  me."
"Yes," said Leia.  "You're a great help to us.  You're a natural leader."
"No!  That's __________________  it.  Come on."  Han looked at Leia.  "Come on."
Leia looked at Han, and she understood what he was thinking.  "You're imagining things," she said.
"Am I?" said Han.  "Then why are you following me?  Are you afraid I was going to leave without __________________  you a goodbye kiss?"
Leia was angry now.  "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee," she yelled.
"I can arrange that," Han yelled as he walked off.  "You could __________________  a good kiss!"
Later, C3P0 came to talk to Han Solo as Han was fixing his ship.  "Excuse me, sir," C3P0 said.  "Might I have a word with you, please?"
"What do you __________________?" Han asked.
"Well, it's Princess Leia, sir.  She's been trying to get you on the communicator," C3P0 said.  (A "communicator" is like a telephone.)
"I turned it off," Han said.  "I don't want __________________  talk to her."
"Oh," said C3P0.  "Well, Princess Leia is wondering about Master Luke.  He hasn't come back yet.  She doesn't know __________________  he is."
"I don't know where he is," Han said.
"__________________  knows where he is," said C3P0.
Han was confused now.  "What __________________  you mean nobody knows?" he asked.
Han asked everyone to try to find out what had happened to Luke.  Nobody knew.  Han decided to go out to find Luke himself.
"It's too cold," someone warned Han.  "You and your animal will freeze to death once it becomes night."
But Han didn't listen.  He rode out of the base on his animal.
Meanwhile, Luke woke up to find himself hanging upside down in a cave.  There was a big monster.  Luke's lightsaber weapon was out of reach.  However, Luke concentrated his mind on the lightsaber.  Using his new powers of the Force, Luke moved the lightsaber with his mind.  The lightsaber flew into his hand.  Luke freed himself, and killed the monster.  He was safe from one danger, but he still had to face the danger of the cold.  He walked out of the cave, and fell into the snow.
Meanwhile, back at the base, the soldiers decided they had to close the base doors.  "Your Highness," one of the men said to Princess Leia.  "There's nothing more we can do tonight.  The doors must  __________________  closed."
C3P0 spoke to Princess Leia.  "R2D2 says the chances of survival are 725 to one."  Chewbacca howled with sadness.  "Actually, R2D2 has been known to make mistakes from time to time.  Oh, dear, oh, dear."  C3P0 added to R2D2, "don't __________________  about Master Luke.  I'm sure he'll be all right.  He's quite clever, you know, for a human being."

The Empire Strikes Back Part 3 (23:56--35:53)
Review of Part 2  (12:57--23:56)
Read this summary of part 2, and fill in the blanks with the words from the box.
as, do, everything, for, found, got, last, not, nothing, of, to, to, your
Luke was lying in the snow.  He had a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi.  (A "vision" is something you can see.)  Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke _______________ Luke.  "You will go to the Dagobah system.  There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me."
The vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi faded, and Han Solo rode up to Luke.  Han panicked because Luke appeared lifeless.  "Luke!  Luke!  Don't _______________ this, Luke.  Come on, give me a sign here."  Han was able to keep Luke warm for the night, and saved Luke's life.
The next morning, several flying ships were looking for Luke and Han.  One of the pilots talked into his radio transmitter.  "Captain Solo, do you copy?  Commander Skywalker, do you copy?"
Then, Han's voice came back over the radio.  "Good morning.  Nice of you guys to drop by."
The pilot's face changed into a smile.  He radioed back to the base.  "I've _______________ them.  Repeat, I've found them."
Back at the base, Luke was recovering in a hospital bed.  Han came to see him.  "How are you feeling, kid?  You don't look so bad _______________ me," Han said.
            "Thanks to you," Luke answered.
"That's two you owe me, junior," Han said.
Then Han turned to Princess Leia.  "Well your Worship, looks like you've managed to keep me around for a little while longer."
"I had _______________ to do with it," Leia replied.  "The General thinks it's too dangerous for any ships to leave the system until we've activated the energy shield."
"That's a good story," Han said.  "But I think the truth is that you just can't bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of _______________ sight."
"I don't know where you get your delusions, laser brain," said Leia.  (A "delusion" is a belief that is not true.)
Chewbacca thought this was funny, and laughed.  Han turned to Chewbacca.  "Laugh it up, fuzzball," Han said angrily.  "But you didn't see us alone in the south passage.  She expressed her true feelings _______________ me."
Leia was angry now.  "Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking, nerf-herder!" she yelled.
"Who's scruffy-looking?" asked Han.  Then Han turned to Luke.  "I must have hit pretty close to the mark to get her all riled up like that, huh kid?"
"Well, I guess you don't know _______________ about women yet," Leia responded, and gave Luke a big kiss on the lips, before turning and walking away.
Luke put his hands behind his head in triumph.  Han looked at Luke.  "Take it easy," Han said, before walking away himself.
Later, back at the command center, the rebel soldiers picked up a strange sound.  They didn't know what it was.  "It isn't friendly, whatever it is," Han said.  "Come on, Chewie, let's check it out."
Han and Chewbacca went outside to find the robot.  The robot fired at them.  Han fired back.  The robot exploded.
Han radioed back to the rebel base.  "I'm afraid there's _______________ much left," Han said.
            "What was it?" Leia asked.
"A robot of some kind," Han said.  "I didn't hit it that hard.  It must have had a self-destruct."
"An Imperial probe," Leia concluded.  (A "probe" is a robot designed to look for something.)
"It's a good bet the Empire knows we're here," said Han.
"We'd better start the evacuation," said the General.  (An "evacuation" is when all the people have to leave an area.)
Meanwhile, the Empire was looking for the rebel base.  On one of the ships, a captain talked to his admiral.  ("Captain" and "admiral" are both positions in the military.  An admiral is higher than a captain.)  "I think we've _______________ something, sir," the captain said.
The admiral didn't believe him.  "We have thousands of probes searching the galaxy," the admiral said angrily.  "I want proof, not leads!"
But then Darth Vader came over.  "You've found something?" Darth Vader asked.
"Yes, my lord," the captain said.  He showed Darth Vader the pictures.
"That's it.  The Rebels are there," Darth Vader said confidently.  "That is the system.  And I'm sure Skywalker is with them.  Set your course for the Hoth system.  General, prepare your men."
Meanwhile, back at the rebel base, Luke was saying good-bye to Chewbacca and Han Solo.  "Chewie, take care _______________ yourself, okay?" Luke said.
Han looked down at Luke from his ship.  "Hi, kid.  You all right?
            "Yeah," Luke answered
            "Be careful," said Han.
"You, too," said Luke, and he walked away.
Meanwhile, back on the Imperial ship, a soldier came to report to Darth Vader.  "What is it, General?" asked Darth Vader.
"My lord, the fleet has moved out of light-speed," said the general.
Darth Vader was angry.  "The Rebels are alerted to our presence.  Admiral Ozzel came out of light-speed too close to the system."
"He felt surprise was wiser--" began the general.
But Darth Vader stopped him.  "He is as clumsy _______________ he is stupid."  Darth Vader turned to the view screen, where he saw the admiral.  "You have failed me for the _______________ time, Admiral," Darth Vader said.  Using his mind control powers, he stopped the admiral from breathing, and killed him.  Then Darth Vader turned to the captain.  "Make ready to land our troops beyond the energy shield and deploy the fleet so that nothing gets off that planet.  You are in command now, Admiral Piett."
Talk with a partner.  What do you think is going to happen in the next part of the movie?
Answers:

Luke was lying in the snow.  He had a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi.  (A "vision" is something you can see.)  Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke to Luke.  "You will go to the Dagobah system.  There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me."
The vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi faded, and Han Solo rode up to Luke.  Han panicked because Luke appeared lifeless.  "Luke!  Luke!  Don't do this, Luke.
"I've found them.  Repeat, I've found them."
Back at the base, Luke was recovering in a hospital bed.  Han came to see him.  "How are you feeling, kid?  You don't look so bad to me," Han said.
            "Thanks to you," Luke answered.
"That's two you owe me, junior," Han said.
Then Han turned to Princess Leia.  "Well your Worship, looks like you've managed to keep me around for a little while longer."
"I had nothing to do with it," Leia replied.  "The General thinks it's too dangerous for any ships to leave the system until we've activated the energy shield."
"That's a good story," Han said.  "But I think the truth is that you just can't bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your sight."
She expressed her true feelings for me."
"Well, I guess you don't know everything about women yet," Leia responded, and gave Luke a big kiss on the lips, before turning and walking away.
"I'm afraid there's not much left," Han said.

After the fight was over, Luke and R2D2 took off in their ship.
While they ________________ flying, R2D2 beeped a question to Luke.  "There's nothing wrong, R2," Luke responded.  "I'm just setting a new course."  R2D2 beeped once again.  "We're not going to regroup with the others," Luke responded.  "We're going to Dagobah."
And so, Luke and R2D2 went in a different direction than Han's ship.
Meanwhile, Han was trying to escape from the Empire's ships.
Chewbacca growled a warning to Han.  "I saw them!  I saw them!" Han yelled back.
               "Saw what?" Leia asked.
"Star Destroyers, two of them, coming right at us," Han said.
C3P0 came into the room.  "Sir, sir!  Might I suggest--" he began.
But Han stopped him.  "Shut him ________________ or shut him down!" Han yelled to Leia.  Then Han said to Chewbacca, "prepare to make the jump to light-speed."
The enemy ships were getting closer.  "They're getting closer!" said Leia.
"Oh yeah?" said Han  "Watch this."
Han threw the switch, but nothing happened.
               "Watch what?" Leia asked.
Han tried again.  Still nothing.  "I think we're ________________ trouble," said Han.
"If I may say so, sir, I noticed earlier that the ship has been damaged," C3P0 said.  "It's impossible to go to light-speed!"
               "We're in trouble!" Han said.
Han and Chewbacca ran to the back to fix the ship.  "I don't know ________________ we're going to get out of this one," Han said.
Suddenly, a loud thump hit the side of the ship, causing it to go sideways.  The tools fell into the pit on top of Han.  "Oww!  Chewie!" Han yelled.  The ship rocked some more.  "That was no laser blast!" Han said.  "Something hit us."
"Han, get up here!" Leia said over the intercom.
Han and Chewbacca ran into the control room.  "Asteroids!" Leia said.  ("Asteroids" are rocks in outer space.)
Han flew the ship into the asteroid field.  Princess Leia was shocked.  "What are you doing?  You're not actually going into an asteroid field?" she said.
"They'd be crazy to follow us, ________________ they?" Han responded.
The asteroids were very dangerous.  The ship was getting damaged.  "You said you ________________ to be around when I made a mistake," Han said to Leia.  "Well, this could be it, sweetheart."
"I take it back," Leia said.
"I'm going in ________________ to one of those big ones," Han said.
               "Closer?" said Leia.
               "Closer?" said C3P0.
"Oh, this is suicide!" C3P0 exclaimed.
Han pointed at a hole in the asteroid.  "There.  That looks pretty good," he said.
"What looks pretty good?" Leia asked.
"There.  That'll do nicely," Han said.
"Excuse me, ma'am, but where are we going?" C3P0 asked Leia.
Han flew the ship into the big hole.  "I hope ________________ know what you're doing," Leia said to Han.
            "Yeah, me too," Han responded.
Meanwhile, Luke and R2D2 flew to the planet Dagobah.
R2D2 beeped a question.  "Yes, that's it," Luke said.  "Dagobah."
R2D2 beeped another question.  "No, I'm not going to change my ________________ about this," Luke said.
Luke flew his plane down into the planet, but there was too much fog.  "I can't see a thing!" Luke yelled.  The plane crashed into a swamp.
R2D2 and Luke both got out of the plane.  "You stay put," Luke said to R2D2. "I'll have a look around."
But R2D2 fell into the water.  "R2!" Luke yelled.  "R2!  Where are you?"  A small bit of R2D2 came up from the water.  Luke was relieved.  "You ________________ more careful," Luke said to R2D2.
R2D2 went towards the land, but he was eaten by a swamp monster.  Fortunately, robots don't taste very good, so the swamp monster spit R2D2 out.  Luke ran over to R2D2.  "Oh, no!  Are you all right?" Luke said.  "You ________________ lucky to get out of there.  Anything broken?"
            R2D2 beeped.
"If you're saying coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you," Luke said.  "Oh, R2, what are we ________________ here?  It's like something out of a dream, or, I don't know.  Maybe I'm just going crazy."
Meanwhile, the admiral went to report to Darth Vader.  "Yes, Admiral?" Darth Vader said.
"Our ships have sighted the ship, my lord.  But it has entered an asteroid field and we cannot risk--"
Darth Vader stopped him.  "Asteroids do not concern me, Admiral.  I ________________ that ship, not excuses."
"Yes, my lord," the admiral replied.
Meanwhile, Han's ship was at the bottom of a deep hole in an asteroid.
"I'm going to shut down everything but the emergency power systems," Han said.
"Sir, I'm almost afraid to ask, but does that include shutting me down, too?" C3P0 said.
"No, I need you to talk to the ship's computers, find out what's wrong with it," Han said.
Suddenly, the ship rocked back and forth.  "Sir," C3P0 said, "it's quite possible this asteroid is not entirely stable."  ("Stable" means something that does not move.  If something is "not stable" then it moves a lot.)
"Not entirely stable?  Well I'm glad you're here to tell ________________ these things," Han said sarcastically.  "Chewie, take the professor in the back and plug him into the ship."
As C3P0 and Chewbacca left, C3P0 complained, "Sometimes I just don't understand human behaviour.  After all, I'm only trying to ________________ my job."
The ship rocked again.  Leia fell into Han's arms.  "Let go," Leia said.
            "Sshh!" Han replied.
"Let go, please," Leia said again.
            "Don't get excited," Han said.
"Captain, being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited," said Leia.
"Sorry, sweetheart.  I haven't got time for anything ________________," Han said.  Han smiled and walked away.

"They'd be crazy to follow us, wouldn't they?" Han responded.
The asteroids were very dangerous.  The ship was getting damaged.  "You said you wanted to be around when I made a mistake," Han said to Leia.  "Well, this could be it, sweetheart."
"I take it back," Leia said.
"I'm going in closer to one of those big ones," Han said.
"I hope you know what you're doing," Leia said to Han.
            "Yeah, me too," Han responded.
Meanwhile, Luke and R2D2 flew to the planet Dagobah.
R2D2 beeped a question.  "Yes, that's it," Luke said.  "Dagobah."
R2D2 beeped another question.  "No, I'm not going to change my mind about this," Luke said.
"You be more careful," Luke said to R2D2.
R2D2 went towards the land, but he was eaten by a swamp monster.  Fortunately, robots don't taste very good, so the swamp monster spit R2D2 out.  Luke ran over to R2D2.  "Oh, no!  Are you all right?" Luke said.  "You were lucky to get out of there.  Anything broken?"
            R2D2 beeped.
"If you're saying coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you," Luke said.  "Oh, R2, what are we doing here?  It's like something out of a dream, or, I don't know.  Maybe I'm just going crazy."
Meanwhile, the admiral went to report to Darth Vader.  "Yes, Admiral?" Darth Vader said.
"Our ships have sighted the ship, my lord.  But it has entered an asteroid field and we cannot risk--"
Darth Vader stopped him.  "Asteroids do not concern me, Admiral.  I want that ship, not excuses."
Well I'm glad you're here to tell us these things," Han said sarcastically.  "Chewie, take the professor in the back and plug him into the ship."
As C3P0 and Chewbacca left, C3P0 complained, "Sometimes I just don't understand human behaviour.  After all, I'm only trying to do my job."
I haven't got time for anything else," Han said.  Han smiled and walked away.

"I will stay and help you find your friend," the creature said.

"Do  ___________  know him?" asked Luke
"I will take you to him," the creature said.  "But now, we must eat.  Come.  Come."
            The creature walked away.
"Stay here and watch after the camp, R2," Luke said, before following the creature.
Meanwhile, in Han's ship, Leia was trying to fix the ship.  Han tried to help her, but she angrily pushed him away.  "Hey, Your Worship, I'm only trying to help," Han said.
"Would you please stop  ___________  me that?" Leia said.
            "Sure, Leia," Han answered.

"Occasionally," Leia said.  "When you aren't acting like a scoundrel."  (A "scoundrel" is a bad person.)
"Scoundrel?  Scoundrel?" Han said.  "I like the sound of that."  Han took Leia's hand and started to massage it.
            "Stop that," Leia said.
            "Stop what?" said Han.
"Stop that!  My hands are dirty," said Leia.
"My hands are dirty, too.  What are you afraid  ___________?" Han asked
            "Afraid?"
            "You're trembling."
            "I'm not trembling."
"You like me because I'm a scoundrel.  There aren't enough scoundrels in your life."
"I happen to like nice men."
            "I'm a nice man."
"No, you're not," Leia said, right before Han  ___________  her.
As they kissed, C3P0 ran into the room.  "Sir, sir!  I've fixed the ship."
"Thank you," said Han sarcastically.  "Thank you very much."
"Oh, you're perfectly welcome, sir," C3P0 answered.
Meanwhile, Darth Vader was talking to his commanders.  They were still looking for Han's ship.  "The ship must have been destroyed," said one captain.
"No, Captain, they're alive," Darth Vader  ”I want every ship available to sweep the asteroid field until they  ___________  found."
An admiral walked in.  "Lord Vader."
"Yes, Admiral, what is it?" Darth Vader said.
"The Emperor commands you make contact with him," the admiral replied.
Darth Vader knelt on the floor to talk to the Emperor.
"There is a great disturbance in the Force," said the Emperor.
"I have felt it," said Darth Vader.
"We have a new enemy - Luke Skywalker," the Emperor said.
"Yes, my master," Darth Vader replied.
"He could destroy us," the Emperor said.
"He's just a boy.  Obi-Wan can no longer  ___________  him," said Darth Vader.
"The Force is strong with him.  The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi," said the Emperor.
"If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally," said Darth Vader.
"Yes.  Yes," agreed the Emperor.  "He would be a great asset.  Can it be  ___________?"
"He will join us or die, my master," Darth Vader answered.
Meanwhile, the strange green creature was cooking food for Luke.  "I just don't understand why we can't see Yoda now," Luke said.
            "Patience!" said the creature.
"How far away is Yoda?" asked Luke.  "Will it take us long to get there?"
"Not far.  Yoda is not far.  Patience.  Soon you will be with him," said the creature.  "Why do you want to become a Jedi?"
"Mostly because of my father, I guess," Luke answered.
"Ah, your father.  He was a  powerful Jedi," the creature said.
"Oh, come on.  How could you know my father?  You don't  ___________  know who I am," Luke said.  Then Luke yelled in frustration, "Oh, I don't even know what I'm doing here.  We're wasting our  ___________."
The creature looked away and spoke to the air.  "I cannot teach him.  The boy  ___________  no patience."
Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice came through the air.  "He will learn patience," Obi-Wan said.
"There is much anger in him, like his father," the creature continued.
"Was I any different when you taught  ___________?" Obi-Wan asked.
"He is not ready," said the creature.
It was then that Luke realized who the creature was.  "Yoda," he said.  The creature nodded.  "I am ready.  I can be a Jedi.  Ben, tell him I'm ready."
            "You are reckless!" Yoda said.
"So was I, if you'll remember," Obi-Wan answered.
"He is too old.  Yes, too old to begin the training," said Yoda.
"But I've learned  ___________  much," said Luke.
"Will he finish what he begins?" Yoda asked to Obi-Wan.
"I won't fail you," said Luke.  "I'm not afraid."
Yoda looked at him.  "Oh, you will be.  You will be."
Meanwhile, back on Han's ship, Leia ran over to talk to Han.  "There's something out there."
            "Where?" asked Han.
            "Outside, in the cave."
"I'm going out there," Han said.
            "Are you crazy?" Leia asked.
"I just got this ship back together.  I'm not going to let something tear it apart," said Han.
"Then I'm going with you," said Leia.
"I think it might be better if I stay here and guard the ship," C3P0 said.
Outside in the cave, Leia said, "This ground sure feels strange.  It doesn't feel like rock at all.  I don't know.  I have a bad  ___________ about this."
            "Yeah," said Han.
They found big birds on the ship.  Han and Chewbacca shot at them.  But then the cave began to rock back and forth violently.  "Wait a minute," Han said.  He realized what was going on.
"Back in the ship," Han yelled to everyone.  "All right, Chewie, let's get out of here!"
"The Empire is still out there," Leia said.  "I don't think it's wise to--."
But Han stopped her.  "No time to discuss this in committee."  (A "committee" is a group of people.)
"I am not a committee!" Leia said angrily.
"Sit down, sweetheart.  We're taking off!" Han said.
            C3P0 pointed.  "Look!"
"I see it, I see it," Han replied.
"The cave is collapsing," Leia said.

"Sir, we just lost the main rear deflector shield.  One more direct hit on the back quarter and we're done for," C3P0 said.
"Turn the ship around," Han said.
"You're going to attack them?" Princess Leia asked in disbelief.
They flew at the Empire's ship.
Back on the Empire's ship, the captain was trying to find Han's ship.  "Track them.  They may come around for another pass," the captain said.
"Captain, the ship no longer appears on our computers," one of the men said.
"They can't have disappeared," the captain said.
"Well, there's no trace of them, sir," the man responded.
Then another man said, "Captain, Lord Vader demands an update on the pursuit."
"Get a shuttle ready," said the Captain.  "I shall   assume full responsibility for losing them, and apologize to Lord Vader. Meanwhile, continue to search the area."
            "Yes, Captain," the man replied.
Meanwhile, back on the planet Dagobah, Yoda was teaching Luke how to move rocks with his mind.  While Luke was training, his plane sank into the swamp.
"Oh, no," Luke said.  "We'll never get it out now."
"You are so certain," said Yoda.  "You always say it cannot be done.  Have you heard nothing that I've said?"
"Master, moving stones around is one thing.  This is _________________ different," said Luke.
"No!  It's not different!  It's only different in your mind," said Yoda.  "You must unlearn what you _________________ learned."
"All right, I'll give _________________ a try," Luke said.
"No!" said Yoda.  "Don't try.   Do it.  Or don't do it.  There is no such thing as trying."
Luke tried to lift the plane up, but he could not.  "I can't," Luke said.  "It's too big."
            "Size doesn't matter," Yoda replied.
"You want the impossible," Luke said, and walked off angrily.
Yoda lifted the whole plane out of the swamp with his mind.  Luke was amazed.  "I _________________ believe it," Luke said.
"That is why you fail," Yoda responded.
Meanwhile, back on Darth Vader's ship, Darth Vader choked the captain to death with his mind.  "Apology accepted, Captain," Darth Vader said sarcastically.
"Lord Vader," said the admiral, "our ships have completed their search of the area and found nothing.  If the ship went into light-speed, it'll be on the other side of the galaxy by now."
"Alert all commands," Darth Vader said.
"Yes, my lord.  We'll find them," the admiral replied.
"Don't fail _________________ again, Admiral," Darth Vader said.
Meanwhile, Han's ship was attached to the side of the Empire's ship.  "Captain Solo, this time you have gone _________________ far," C3P0 said.  Chewbacca growled.  "No, I will not be quiet, Chewbacca.  Why doesn't _________________ listen to me?"
Leia reached over and turned C3P0 off.
            "Thank you," said Han.
"What did you have in mind for your next move?" Leia asked.
"Well, if they follow standard Imperial procedure, they'll dump their garbage before they go to light-speed, then we just float away," Han said.
"With the rest of the garbage," Leia finished.  "Then what?"
"Then we've got to find a safe port somewhere around here," Han said.  (A "port" is a place to land a ship.)  "Got any ideas?"
"No," said Leia.  "Where are we?"
            "The Anoat system," Han answered.
"Anoat system.  There's not much there," said Leia.
Han checked the computer.  "No.  Well, wait.  This is interesting.  Lando."
            "Lando system?" asked Leia.
"Lando's not a system, he's a man.  Lando Calrissian.  He's a card player, gambler, scoundrel.  You'd like him."
            "Thanks," said Leia.
"We go _________________ a long way, Lando and me," Han said.
"_________________ you trust him?" asked Leia.
"No.  But he has no love for the Empire, I can tell you that," said Han.
As the Empire's ship let their garbage out, Han ordered Chewbacca to detach the ship.  Han's ship floated away with the garbage, unseen by the Empire's ships.  Hans plan was working.
"You do have your moments," Leia admitted.  "Not many _________________ them, but you do have them."
The Empire's ships flew away.  Once the Empire's ships were gone, Han's ship also flew away.  But Han didn't realize that the bounty hunter Boba Fett was following him.

On the Empire's ship, a group of bounty hunters were gathered.  ("Bounty hunters" are people who catch other people for money.)  Darth Vader was talking to them.  "There will be a substantial reward for the one who finds the ship.  You are free to use any methods necessary, but I want them alive.  No killing."  As he said this, Darth Vader pointed to a bounty hunter named Boba Fett.
"As you wish," answered Boba Fett.
Then the admiral approached.  "Lord Vader!  My lord, we have them."
The Empire's ship was chasing Han's ship.  "Oh, thank goodness we're coming out of the asteroid field," said C3P0.
"Let's get out of here," Han said.  "Ready for light-speed?  One, two, three!"
Han pulled the switch, but nothing happened.  "It's not fair," yelled Han.
            "No light-speed?" asked Princess Leia.
"It's not my fault," Han said.

Back at Dagobah, Luke ____________ still studying with Yoda.  Yoda was teaching him to use the Force.  Luke was carrying many things in the air with his mind.  Then Luke had a vision.  "Han!  Leia!" Luke yelled out.  Everything fell to the ground.
Yoda was not happy.  "Control, control.  You must learn control," Yoda said.
"I saw a city ____________ the clouds," Luke said.
Yoda thought.  "You have friends there," he said.
"They were in pain," Luke said.
"It is the future you see," Yoda said.
"The future?  Will they die?" asked Luke.
Yoda closed his eyes and lowered his head.  "It's difficult to see.  The future is always in motion."
"I've got to go to them," Luke said.
"You must decide how to serve them best," Yoda said.  "If you leave now, you could help them.  But you would destroy all for which they have fought and suffered."
Meanwhile, Han's ship was flying towards Cloud City.  Han was on the radio to the other ships.  "No, I don't have a landing permit.  I'm trying to reach Lando Calrissian."
One of the ships fired at Han's ship.  "Whoa!  Wait a minute!  Let ____________ explain," Han said.
"You will not deviate from your present course," said the other ship.
"Rather touchy, aren't they?" C3P0 remarked.
"I thought you knew this person," said Leia.
Chewbacca growled.  "Well, that was a long time ago," Han said.  "I'm sure he's forgotten ____________ that.  There's nothing to worry about.  We go way back, Lando and me."
            "Who's worried?" asked Leia.
Han's ship landed, and everyone got out.  "Oh.  No one to meet us," C3P0 commented.
"I don't like this," Leia said.
"Well, what would you like?" Han asked.
"They did let us land," C3P0 said.
"Look, don't worry.  Everything's going to ____________ fine.  Trust me," Han said.
The door to the city opened, and Lando came out.  "See?  My friend," Han said.  But then in a softer voice, Han added to Chewbacca, "Keep your eyes ____________, okay?"
Lando approached Han.  "Why, you slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler!  You've got a lot of guts coming here, after what you pulled."
Han pointed to himself innocently, and mouthed "Me?"
Lando moved threateningly toward Han.  But then suddenly, he threw his arms around Han, hugging him.  "How are you doing, you old pirate?  It's so good to ____________ you!  I never thought I'd catch up with you again.  Where have you been?"
"Well, he seems very friendly," C3P0 remarked.
"Yes, very friendly," Leia said, but her voice still sounded worried.
"What are you doing here?" Lando asked.
Han gestured towards his ship.  "Repairs.  I thought you could help me out."
"What ____________ you done to my ship?" asked Lando.
"Your ship?" said Han.  "Hey, remember, you lost her to me fair and square."
"How are you doing Chewbacca?" Lando asked.  "Are you still hanging around with this loser?"  Lando suddenly noticed the princess and smiled.  "Hello.  What have we here?  Welcome.  I'm Lando Calrissian.  And ____________ might you be?"
            "Leia," answered the Princess.
"Welcome, Leia," said Lando, kissing her hand.
"All right, all right, you old smoothie," Han said, taking Leia's hand away from Lando.
C3P0 eagerly approached Lando.  "Hello, sir.  I am C3P0, human-cyborg relations.  My facilities are at your--"  But Lando walked away before C3P0 could finish his self-introduction.  "Well, really!" said C3P0 angrily.
"What's wrong with the ship?" Lando asked.
            "Hyperdrive," Han said.
"I'll get my people ____________ work on it," said Lando.
            "Good," said Han.
"You know, that ship saved my life quite a few times," said Lando.  "She's the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy."
As they walked down the hall, C3P0 saw a similar robot.  "Oh!  Nice to see a familiar ____________," he said.  The robot responded with an insult.  "How rude!" C3P0 said.  C3P0 wandered in to the room, when suddenly a man's voice asked him, "Who are you?"
"Oh, I'm terribly sorry.  I didn't mean to intrude.  No, no, please don't ____________ up.  No!" C3P0 was shot, causing his robot body to scatter in all directions.
Meanwhile, Luke was preparing to leave Dagobah.  Yoda was trying to convince him to stay.  "Luke!  You must complete the training," Yoda pleaded.
"I can't keep the vision out of my head," said Luke.  "They're my friends.  I've got to help ____________."
"You must not go!" said Yoda.
"But Han and Leia will die if I don't," Luke said.
Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice came from the air.  "You don't know that."  Obi-Wan appeared before Luke.  "Even Yoda cannot see their fate."
"But I can help them!  I feel the Force!" said Luke
"But you cannot control it.  This is a dangerous ____________ for you, when you will be tempted by the dark side of the Force," said Obi-Wan.
"Yes, yes.  Listen to Obi-Wan," said Yoda.  "Remember your failure at the cave!"
"But I've learned so much since then," said Luke.  "Master Yoda, I promise to return and finish what I've begun.   You have ____________ word."
"It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants.  That is why your friends are made to suffer," said Obi-Wan.
"And that is why I have to go," said Luke.
"Luke, I don't want to lose you to the Emperor the way I ____________ Vader," said Obi-Wan.
            "You won't," said Luke.
"Only a fully trained Jedi Knight with the Force as his ally will conquer Vader and his Emperor," said Yoda.  "If you end your training now, if you choose the quick and easy path, as Vader did, you will become an agent of evil."
            "Patience," said Obi-Wan.
"And sacrifice Han and Leia?" asked Luke.
"If you honor what they fight for, yes!" said Yoda.
"If you choose to face Vader, you will do it alone," said Obi-Wan.  "I cannot interfere."
            "I understand," Luke said.
Luke prepared to leave.  Obi-Wan shouted out a final warning to him.  "Luke, don't give in to hate--that leads to the dark side."
"Vader is strong.  Remember ____________ you have learned.  It can save you," said Yoda.
"I will.  And I'll return.  I promise," said Luke.  And then Luke flew away in his plane.
Yoda sighed.  "I told you he was reckless.  Now matters are worse."
"That boy is ____________ last hope," said Obi-Wan.
"No.  There is another," said Yoda.
Meanwhile, Han and Leia were talking in Cloud City.  "The ship is almost finished," said Han.  "Two or three more things and we're in great shape."
"The sooner the better," Leia said.  "Something's wrong here.  No one has seen or knows anything about 3P0.  He's been gone ____________ long to have gotten lost.
"Relax," said Han.  "I'll talk to Lando and ____________ what I can find out."
"I don't trust Lando," said Leia.
"Well, I don't trust him, either," said Han.  "But he is my friend.  Besides, we'll soon be gone."
Chewbacca came in with the pieces of C3P0.  "What happened?" asked Leia.
Chewbacca growled.  "Where?  Found him in a junk pile?" said Han.
"Oh, what a mess.  Chewie, do you think you can repair him?" asked Leia.
            Chewbacca shrugged.
"Lando's got people who can fix him," said Han.
            "No, thanks," said Leia.
The door opened and Lando came in.  "I'm sorry.  Am I interrupting ____________?" asked Lando.
            "Not really," said Leia.
"You look absolutely beautiful," Lando said to Leia.  "You truly belong here with us among the clouds.  Would you join me ____________ a little refreshment?"  Chewbacca growled.  "Everyone's invited, of course," Lando said.
As they walked, Han and Leia talked to Lando.  "Aren't you afraid the Empire's going to find out about this little operation and shut you down?" asked Han.
"That's always been a danger," Lando said.  "But I've just made a deal that will keep the Empire out of here forever."
Lando opened the door, revealing Darth Vader.  Han shot at Darth Vader, but Darth Vader blocked the lasers and took away Han's gun with his mind.  "We ____________ be honored if you would join us," Darth Vader said.  Behind Han and Leia, stormtroopers arrived.
Han gave Lando a mean look.  "I had no choice.  They arrived right before you ____________.  I'm sorry," said Lando.
            "I'm sorry, too," said Han.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice came from the air.  "You don't know that."  Obi-Wan appeared before Luke.  "Even Yoda cannot see their fate."
"But I can help them!  I feel the Force!" said Luke
"But you cannot control it.  This is a dangerous time for you, when you will be tempted by the dark side of the Force," said Obi-Wan.
"Yes, yes.  Listen to Obi-Wan," said Yoda.  "Remember your failure at the cave!"
"But I've learned so much since then," said Luke.  "Master Yoda, I promise to return and finish what I've begun.   You have my word."
"It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants.  That is why your friends are made to suffer," said Obi-Wan.
"And that is why I have to go," said Luke.
"Luke, I don't want to lose you to the Emperor the way I lost Vader," said Obi-Wan.
"Luke, don't give in to hate --that leads to the dark side."
"Vader is strong.  Remember what you have learned.  It can save you," said Yoda.
"I will.  And I'll return.  I promise," said Luke.  And then Luke flew away in his plane.
Yoda sighed.  "I told you he was reckless.  Now matters are worse."
"That boy is our last hope," said Obi-Wan.
He's been gone too long to have gotten lost.
"Relax," said Han.  "I'll talk to Lando and see what I can find out."
"I'm sorry.  Am I interrupting anything?" asked Lando.
            "Not really," said Leia.
"You look absolutely beautiful," Lando said to Leia.  "You truly belong here with us among the clouds.  Would you join me for a little refreshment?"  Chewbacca growled.
"We would be honored if you would join us," Darth Vader said.  Behind Han and Leia, stormtroopers arrived.
Han gave Lando a mean look.  "I had no choice.  They arrived right before you did.  I'm sorry," said Lando.
            "I'm sorry, too," said Han.

Meanwhile, Darth Vader was torturing Han Solo.  Lando and Boba Fett were waiting outside.
Darth Vader came out of the room.  "You may take Captain Solo to Jabba the Hut after I have Skywalker," Darth Vader said to Boba Fett.
"He's no good ___________ me dead," Boba Fett said.
"He will not be permanently damaged," Darth Vader said.
"Lord Vader, what about Leia and Chewbacca?" Lando asked.
"They must never again leave this city," Vader replied.
"That was never a condition of our agreement, nor was giving Han to this bounty hunter!" Lando said angrily
"Perhaps you think you're ___________ treated unfairly?" Vader asked.
            Lando paused, before saying, "No."
"Good," said Vader.  "It would be unfortunate if I had to leave soldiers here."
Vader closed the door.  Lando walked away, saying to himself, "This deal is ___________ worse all the time."
Meanwhile Chewbacca was in a prison cell.  He was trying to repair C3P0.  C3P0 was talking.  "Oh, yes, that's very good.  I like that," said C3P0.  Chewbacca continued to press buttons.  "Oh!  Something's not right because now I can't see," said C3P0.  Chewbacca continued to press more buttons.  C3P0's sight came back, but he realized his head was attached backwards.  "Wait.  Wait!  Oh, my!  What have you ___________?  I'm backwards, you stupid furball.  Only an overgrown mophead like you would be stupid enough--."
            Chewbacca turned C3P0 off suddenly.
Han was brought in to the jail cell by the stormtroopers.  Han was so weak he could barely stand up.  "I ___________ terrible," said Han.  Chewbacca helped Han to a platform and then turned as the door slid open revealing Leia.  The stormtroopers pushed her into the cell, and then the door slid closed.  Leia moved to Han, who was lying on the platform, and knelt next to him.
            "Why ___________ they doing this?"
"They never even asked me any questions," Han said in puzzlement.
Next, the door opened and Lando came in.
"Get out of here, Lando!" said Han.
"Shut up and ___________!" Lando said.  "Vader has agreed to turn Leia and Chewie over to me."
            "Over to you?" said Han.
"They'll have to stay here, but ___________ least they'll be safe," Lando said.
            "What about Han?" asked Leia.
"Vader's giving him to the bounty             hunter," Lando said.
"Vader wants ___________ all dead," said Leia.
"He doesn't want you at all," said Lando.  "He's after somebody called Skywalker."
            "Luke?" asked Han.
"Lord Vader has set a trap for him," said Lando.
"And we're the bait," Leia concluded.
"Well, he's on his way," said Lando.
Han stood up.  "Perfect.  You fixed us all pretty good, didn't you?  My friend!"
Han punched Lando.  Lando's guards hit Han.  But Lando yelled, "Stop!"
Lando looked at Han.  "I've done all I can.  I'm sorry I couldn't do better, but I got my ___________ problems."
"Yeah, you're a real hero," Han said sarcastically.
Lando and the guards left.  Leia helped Han.  "You certainly have a way ___________ people," Leia said.
Meanwhile, Darth Vader was examining the carbon freezing chamber.  "This facility is crude," Darth Vader said, "but it should be adequate to freeze Skywalker for his journey to the emperor."
A soldier appeared.  "Lord Vader, a ship is approaching."
"Good," said Darth Vader.  "Monitor Skywalker and allow him to land."
"Lord Vader," said Lando, "we only use this facility for carbon freezing.  If you put him in there, it might kill him."
"I do not want the emperor's prize damaged," said Darth Vader.  "We ___________ test it on Captain Solo."
Later, Han, Chewbacca, and Leia were led into the freezing chamber.  C3P0 was tied on to Chewbacca's back.  "If only you had attached my legs, I wouldn't be in this ridiculous position," C3P0 complained.  "Now, remember, Chewbacca, you have a responsibility for me, so ___________ do anything foolish."
"What's going on, buddy?" Han asked Lando.

"The Empire will compensate you if he dies," Vader answered.  "Put him in!"
Chewbacca realized what was about to happen, and started attacking the stormtroopers.
"Oh, no!  No, no, no!  Stop, Chewbacca, stop!" yelled C3P0.
"Stop, Chewie, stop!" Han said.  "Do you hear me?  Stop!"
"Yes, stop, please!  I'm not ready to die," said C3P0.
"Chewie!  Chewie, this won't help me," said Han.  "Hey!  Save your strength.  There'll be another time.  The princess.  You have to take ___________ of her.  Do you hear me?"
Han kissed Leia as the stormtroopers pulled him away.  "I love you!" Leia said.
            "I know," Han answered.
Han was lowered into the chamber, and frozen.  C3P0 could not see.  "What's going on?  Turn around, Chewbacca, I can't see."  Chewbacca turned around, and C3P0 could see.  "Oh, they've encased him in carbonite.  He should be quite well-protected--if he survived the freezing process, that is."
Lando Calrissian knelt down to check on Han.  "Well, Calrissian, did he survive?" asked Vader.
"Yes, he's alive.  And in perfect hibernation," Lando answered.  ("Hibernation" is a long sleep.)
Vader turned to Boba Fett.  "He's all yours bounty hunter.  Reset the chamber for Skywalker."
A soldier came to talk to Vader.  "Skywalker has just landed, my lord," he said.
"Good.  See to it that he finds his ___________ here.  Calrissian, take the princess and the Wookiee to my ship."
"You said they'd be left in the city under my supervision," Lando protested.
"I am altering the deal," Darth Vader answered.  "Pray I don't alter it any further."
Darth Vader left the room, as Lando looked around angrily.

I think I've commented on this before, but I first introduced Star Wars to my daughters in 15-minute segments, which worked perfectly in the first movie, and less so with each succeeding one. That discipline of form in the first movie had me re-evaluating the merits of the others, particularly this movie, which I'd generally thought was the best of the bunch. I've changed my mind on that point (especially after I finally had the super-bizarre time-line discrepancy pointed out to me), and much of that is due to exactly that exercise.

Showing these movies to my students the past couple months has been an interesting trip down memory lane for me. It has been the first time in about possibly 7 or 8 years that I've watched these movies, and I had forgotten how completely amazing they were.

And while I've been in this "Star Wars" zone, hyped up on the magic of the original movies once again, I went back recently and actually re-read a number of your old posts on Star Wars. Including the one in which you said you broke it down into 15 minute chunks for your daughters.

I've actually got a half written blog post floating around my computer at the moment, giving my own thoughts and impressions on re-viewing Star Wars. Which I may post in the next few days, depending on work and other constraints on my time. (It's the end of term over here, so busy season once again). But I'll jot down a few thoughts now anyway, and you might see these same thoughts repeated in a few days in a separate post.

As a kid I used to get so caught up in the excitement of these movies, I never really realized how perfect the original Star Wars movie was in terms of storytelling. Like you said, every character is introduced in a perfect way that keeps the momentum of the story going, each of them have their own perfect little story arch, and each of the characters are perfect fantasy archetypes.

Because all of the character arcs are completed at the end of the first movie, the sequel was always going to be somewhat of an impossible task. (Contrary to what Lucas has said in the years since, it appears from my research that the original trilogy was not planned out from the beginning, and they really didn't have a clue where to go after the initial Star Wars.)

In that respect, The Empire Strikes Back took a bold risk, by having a story where the heroes were not successfully completing a new quest, but where they were constantly on the backfoot the whole time, running, and hiding, and going from one disaster to the other. It was probably the best sequel that could have been hoped for given how completely unnecessary a sequel was to the original.
But, it doesn't live up to the tight plotting of the original. As you say. There's a huge long section in the middle of The Empire Strikes Back which really drags, and the incredible story-telling momentum of the original is gone.

By the 3rd movie it's clear they're out of ideas. Which, in retrospect, should have been a warning sign for the prequels.

Dark Horse Comics did a recent mini-series based on the original script Lucas shopped around, with Ralph McQuarrie's art. I bought the first two issues, then gave up. The artwork riffing off McQuarrie's primitive concepts was really the only draw. The characters, the plot ... man, what a mess. Makes the final achievement all the more amazing, really.

I've read several articles now on how George Lucas's early Star Wars drafts really sucked, until other people got a hold of them, and completely re-wrote everything.

Most recently, there was this cracked.com article on how much George Lucas's at-the-time wife acted as a script doctor to save the original Star Wars.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-women-who-invented-modern-pop-culture-and-got-no-credit/

This of course would explain perfectly why the Star Wars prequels were such a disaster--There was no one around to re-write Lucas's ideas. George Lucas's ego had gotten so big he thought he didn't need anyone to re-write his stuff. (That, and the scenes from the "Making of" documentary, which indicated Lucas was still writing the screenplay after they already started filming, which means the whole thing was a really rushed job.)

What all this doesn't explain, however, is how the original Star Wars ended up being so magically perfect in the first place. I mean, if it was just a matter of getting George Lucas sidelined, and getting in the competent people to write the story, then it should have been easy for all the other movie studios to duplicate Star Wars's success. And yet nobody else could do it. You remember all those "Star Wars" want-to-be imitators in the early 1980s? Not one of them could pull of the same magic.

So, whatever else his faults were, maybe George Lucas does deserve some credit for having a genius idea--even if other people had to completely re-work it for him.

dpreimer said...

I've wondered if Marcia Lucas wasn't the frequent voice of reason. Giving her credit for "all the good ideas" is hyperbole, though -- "all the good edits" might be more accurate. I think George had a unique visual sense for the time, and an insistence on massive scale that was outrageous to everyone else but him. He and McQuarrie clearly connected and worked well together, through all the movies, really -- it's funny how the lead-up to every successive movie had its own buzz, even though we'd been burned by Jar-Jar, because the stills that were leaked looked just so damn cool. But visual problems started creeping in when George's visual sense switched from scale to detail (or clutter).

Yeah, there were a lot of turkeys released in the wake of Star Wars, but again, I'd say the failure was chiefly in the visuals. Everyone wanted to produce the next Star Wars, and nobody was thinking about what caught us by surprise. Except for Ridley Scott. I'd say Alien and Blade Runner were successes because he intuitively got what Lucas had pulled off.

Now everything is trying to look like Scott's early stuff.

Joel Swagman said...

Yes, I agree, the Cracked.com article saying that Maria Lucas was the person who had "all the good ideas" was probably sloppily phrased. All the good edits is probably much better. Still, it illustrates what a mess the original Star Wars would have been without people over-seeing Lucas, which explains the prequels perfectly.

Interesting observation about the visuals I was struck somewhat by the same thought re-watching these movies--how incredibly visual the character of Darth Vader is, for example. His entire costume is genius. The black helmet and cape is perfect for these kind of Space fantasy Saturday-Matinee stories. The decision to hire a huge body builder to play him, so that he towers over all the other actors, is also a visual decision that really payed off.

Of course, it's also james Earl Jones's voice which completes this character. Which I guess brings up another point--the music and the sounds of the original Star Wars was also incredible.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the original Star wars would not have been half as awesome were it not for the music of John Williams.

dpreimer said...

John Williams -- yeah, he pretty much single-handedly provided the soundtrack to my adolescence and early adulthood.

I've been thinking about the little scenes that goosed me when I saw the first movie, as a 12-year-old in '77. Most of them were very brief snippets in the larger canvas. The turrets in the Millennium Falcon were a source of deep fascination (which we never saw again). Then there's this weird thing, another turrety device, on the Death Star -- we don't see it for more than five seconds, I don't think, but wow did it ever get me speculating. There's your standard-issue Storm Trooper, standing guard -- but what was that black-clad dude? All these little hints that this far, far away galaxy had a vast, layered culture we could only guess at. Evocative, never redundant. All those little flourishes began to disappear as the franchise grew ever more bloated.

I never thought about things like the turrets before. But I wonder if on a subconscious level, that was one of the things that so attracted me to Star Wars. (After having re-watched the movies, I've been recently spending a lot of time trying to figure out exactly what was so awesome about it. I mean they were obviously awesome, but sometimes it's hard to put your finger on exactly what it was that made them so spectacular. Maybe it was all that rich detail.)
