Sometimes I find people from other countries have a hard time believing just what a huge cultural and political force religion can play in the United States.  Like when I was living in Australia, the Prime Minister at the time, Julia Gillard, was an atheist.  And what's more, it wasn't even a big deal.  I tried to explain to my Australian friends how this could never happen back in the USA.
Well, now times have changed, and Australia's gone back to having a Christian Prime minister, who's going ahead to inject religion into politics:

Tony Abbott says that boat people are "un-Christian" for coming to Australia the way they do. 

Specifically, he said:

"I don't think it's a very Christian thing to come in by the back door rather than the front door. ... I think the people we accept should be coming the right way and not the wrong way. ... If you pay a people-smuggler, if you jump the queue, if you take yourself and your family on a leaky boat, that's doing the wrong thing, not the right thing, and we shouldn't encourage it."

I think I liked it better when Australia had an atheist prime minister....
