You know, I only saw this movie for the first time this past year. I thought it was wildly uneven -- studio interference, probably -- and could not for the life of me understand how it came to become such an iconic film for my generation. Though I suppose were I to revisit all the films from 1982 I'd find most of them "wildly uneven" at best.
The DVD commentary is interesting, if you ever get a chance to check that out. There was at least some studio interference. (The filmmakers hated the sound track, but the studio insisted on it. Who knows what else they interfered with.) I agree, it is wildly uneven. Surprising given its classic status. But then, the memorable moments are really memorable. Maybe people just just remember the good parts?
