Interesting Random Facts--Names of the Days of the Week
Did you know that we English speakers are doing the days of the week all wrong?
The original classical week used in the Roman Empire was:
Sun Day, Moon Day, Mars Day, Mercury Day, Jupiter Day, Venus Day, and Saturn Day
And indeed this is the system that most other European languages still have to this day.
Except for the Germanic languages. When the system was getting transferred to the Germanic tribes, they substituted in the names of their own gods for Mars Day, Mercury Day, Jupiter Day, and Venus Day which became named after the Germanic gods Tyr, Odin, Thor, and Frige (respectively).
But we still kept the original Roman system for Sun Day, Moon Day, and Saturn Day.
