Why I Saw This Movie/
My History with this Movie/***Spoiler Warning****:
I saw and enjoyed Shaun of the Dead years ago. I had heard from some people that this movie
was from the same team that did Shaun of
the Dead, and I also had this film highly recommended by some friends. That was the only information I went into
this film with, and so the various plot twists took me completely by surprise—which
is the best way to view this movie, by the way, so if you haven’t seen it yet,
don’t read this review any further.
The Review
Admittedly, this film just
retreads the same premise from Shaun of
the Dead (a comedy about people being more concerned about their petty
personal problems than about the zombie apocalypse), and just replaces “body
snatchers” for “zombies”. But I loved Shaun of the Dead and had more than
enough goodwill left in the tank to enjoy this film as well. The film can be hilarious, but also very
clever—for example the way the back story is integrated into the film. It does
a good job of integrating completely normal relatable human problems (mid-life
crisis) with science fiction absurdity.

Ha ha! I'm glad you liked this film. I also went in completely unprepared for what was going to happen in the film and expected that it was simply going to be a melodrama about a group of guys struggling to reconcile their hedonistic youth and fantasies with their mostly sober middle-aged reality. It was enjoyable enough to keep watching, but became even more entertaining when the twists started happening. Good movie!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was my reaction as well. I was just thinking: Oh great, so this is just going to be a boring movie about a mid-life crisis. I wonder why everyone had been recommending this movie so highly to me
ReplyDeleteBut it was just interesting enough to keep watching. And then when all of a sudden the film took a left turn into science fiction absurdity, it just took me completely by surprise--but in a really good way.
