If I Were a Boy--Second Conditional

[Used not so much for practice on the Second Conditional, but to show students that it exists in an authentic piece of English.  I used this for lower level students, and so it is designed to give them a lot of support, but some of that support could be removed for higher level students.  First students read the conditional sentences, then they listen to the song "If I Were A Boy" by Beyonce, and match the sentences from the table to the gaps.  (The sentences in the table are out of order.)]

Which sentence is correct:

If I am a boy, I will understand.

If I were a boy, I would understand.

Why?
