Male employment in wholesale and retail trade (700,000), manufacturing (650,000), and communications (300,000) also remained the same, but there were changes in the other two sectors. Defence-force jobs dropped slightly, from around 220,000 in 1975 to 200,000 in 1995, while male employment in financial jobs rose from just over 400,000 in 1975 to just under 500,000 in 1995. Female employment increased dramatically in four areas. The largest rise was in the finance/banking sector, where female employment trebled from 150,000 in 1975 to 450,000 in 1995.
