Change Chairs

(TESOL Ideas--Any Grammar PointPresent Perfect)
Google: docspub

[Notes: I'm in the process of revising my workshop on "Activities that Can be Used for Any Grammar Point".  Before posting the whole thing, I'm going to post some of the activities separately.  This is an activity that I believe can be used with any grammar point, but the example here is present perfect.]

Change Chairs (Materials: Assumes a classroom in which students have individual chairs) (Preparation: 0)
This is a classic warmer game but it can also be used for individual grammar points.  Make sure there are no extra chairs.  (If there are extra chairs, turn them to face the wall).  The teacher sits in the middle and says a sentence using “Change chairs if + grammar point”
Examples: present continuous “Change chairs if you are wearing sandals”, present perfect “Change chairs if you have been to China”, past simple, “Change chairs if you watched TV yesterday”, going to future “Change chairs if you are going to watch TV tonight” etc.

If the sentence applies to them, the students have to get out of their chair and run to find another chair.  The teacher also joins in and sits in one of the recently vacated chairs.  The student left standing must now sit in the middle, and make a new “change chairs” sentence.

The teacher sits in the middle of the class.
“Change chairs if you have ever eaten frog legs.”
None of the students move.
The teacher changes the sentence.  “Okay, change chairs if you have never eaten frog legs.”
All of the students get up out of their chairs and run to find a new chair.  The teacher also gets up and runs to one of the recently empty chairs, resulting in one of the students not being able to find a new empty chair.
This student must then sit in the middle.  “Change chairs if you have seen the new Star Wars movie.”
About 10 students get up and run for new chairs.  The student in the middle is able to grab a new chair, and a new student is now sitting in the middle.
“Okay, change chairs if you have never been to China.”
