Board Race.  There are 10 questions.  All of the questions are from pages 59, 60, and 61.  Work as a team to find the answers in your book.  Then write the answer on the board.  Only one team member may go up to the board at a time.  You may not bring this piece of paper or your textbook with you to the board.  The first team to get the correct answers to all 11 questions up on the board will get a prize.
1. You might be asked a closed question, where it is possible to answer “yes” or “no.”  In this case, it is very important to __________________________________________________.

Hint:  The candidates will not talk about all these topics.
Candidate 1: The reason why I don’t like this type of weather is that is that it saps all your energy, you know, you just feel like lying around the house all day, you feel really listless and you just don’t get anything done.  Either that, or you freeze to death!  You see, if I’m at my parents’ house, they always have the air-conditioning turned up really high and it’s just so cold.  The other thing is that we have this type of hot, humid weather all year round—the only difference is between the dry and the rainy season, but it’s always hot and very sticky—really not very nice at all.
Candidate 2: One of the things I love about this hot sunny weather is feeling the sun on my face, you see in my country the winters are long and very, very cold, so it’s always a relief to have some sunshine.  I like going walking in the country with my husband.  We both love nature and really enjoy the countryside when it’s green and beautiful.  The sunshine gives me energy and makes me feel happy.  It’s rarely too hot in my part of the country, so we just enjoy it as we know it’s not going to last too long!

Er, probably not!  Some governments have already made some changes, but in my view it’s very unlikely that they will ever do enough.  The problem is that, while governments might introduce green policies to win them more votes, for instance recycling waste, they probably won’t commit themselves to polices that are unpopular with voters.  For instance, getting people out of their cars and onto buses and trains is always a very unpopular measure.

Candidate 1: There are two main problems for the farmers: firstly, I think heavy rain causes the soil to be washed away, I mean the soil with all the minerals in it.  In addition to this many plants rot in the ground because they never have time to dry.  Think when it rains very heavily, for example in my country, it is very difficult for the farmers.
Candidate 2: There are things we can do to help slow global warming.  For instance, we can stop using up all the coal and gas, and use cleaner energy such as power from the wind or sun.
Candidate 3: Rising temperatures will lengthen the food-growing season in some countries.  As a result, farmers will be able to produce more crops which will mean less hunger in the world.  I’m sure you’d agree this is a good thing …. er, a benefit.
Candidate 4: It’s generally agreed that the earth is getting warmer, this is due to more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
