Over
the past few decades, more
and more people have left rural areas to live in cities. This has
resulted in a great deal of urban development in countries all
over the world. On the positive side, urbanisation creates a lot
of employment – particularly in the building sector. However, we
need to manage this development properly so that cities do not
lose their historical buildings.
The
importance of preserving architectural heritage is easy to see.
Cities around the world are defined by their landmark buildings.
The Eiffel Tower, for example, is an unmistakable symbol of Paris
and everyone recognises London’s Big Ben. My hometown, Brisbane,
also has landmarks which give it identity. City Hall is a
magnificent example of English Neo-Classical architecture and
Brisbane is known for its distinctive residential buildings as
well. These buildings, called Queenslanders, are wooden
constructions built on stilts to catch the breeze in summer. This
type of architecture is worth preserving because it distinguishes
Brisbane from other Australian cities such as Sydney and
Melbourne.
One
way for cities to preserve their historical buildings is through
legislation. In Australia, local governments are responsible for
this. Brisbane City Council introduced heritage legislation in the
1980s to prevent the demolition of historically important
buildings. Owners now need to get council approval before they can
alter or knock down a building. As a result of this legislation,
most of the older buildings in the CBD are still standing and
Brisbane has preserved its history and identity. Other governments
could adopt similar policies in order to protect their own
architectural heritage.
Architecture
tourism is another means by which historical buildings can be
preserved. Thousands of tourists flock to Miami, Florida to see
the Art-Deco buildings there. This kind of tourism increases
people’s awareness of architecture and provides a financial
incentive for maintaining historically significant buildings.
Other cities could protect their own heritage by promoting
architecture tourism.
